Depending on various measurements, Seattle’s “Big Dumper”, Cal Raleigh, set records for catchers or switch-hitters, or both, with his 48th and 49th home runs of the season, leading the Mariners to an 11-4 win over the Athletics Sunday afternoon.
Raleigh went 3-for-5, with four RBI.
The most-cited record for catchers was Salvador Perez’s 48 for Kansas City in 2021. Prior to that, before the DH era, Johnny Bench held the mark at 45, playing for the Cincinnati Reds in 1970. There are various measurements because the players aren’t always playing catcher, often in the lineup as DH or first baseman.
Raleigh’s two home run game was his ninth multi-homer game of the season, passing up Mickey Mantle’s mark for switch-hitters of eight, set in 1961 with the Yankees. The overall record is 11 multi-homer games in a season.
Seattle’s win left them two games behind Houston in the AL West race, and still in possession of the final wild card, though they are only one game behind Boston for the top spot, with the Yankees in between 1/2-game behind the Red Sox. Seattle opens a three-game home series with the Padres Monday, then, after a day off Thursday, begins a nine-game road trip, with three each at Cleveland, Tampa Bay, and Atlanta.

The win was the second straight for the Rangers over the Guardians, who have lost four straight overall. Upcoming series through August and into September will be crucial for all teams involved.

Just in time for the stretch run, 2020 Al Cy Young Award winner, Shane Bieber returned from a 16-month absence due to Tommy John surgery and worked six solid innings, leading the Blue Jays to a 5-2 win over the Marlins Friday night in Miami.
Bieber fanned nine batters, did not issue any walks, and allowed only two hits and a hit batsman in his first outing since April, 2024, at one point setting down 12 in a row including striking out the side in the 4th. The lone run he allowed was on a Javier Sanoja solo shot in the 2nd inning. The Blue Jays acquired Bieber from Cleveland at the trade deadline. The move has already paid off with a win and should bolster the Blue Jays staff as they seek their first AL East title since 2015.

In a game that featured 14 walks, 5 errors, a pickoff, a balk, four stolen bases and a playing time approaching 3 1/2 hours, it was Boston’s rookie star,
Roman Anthony, that maintained his poise and delivered the decisive blow, a 9th-inning, two-run homer that turned a tenuous 4-3 lead into a 6-3 victory for the Red Sox over the Yankees in the opener of a critical four-game series in New York.
Anthony sent the first pitch he saw from Yankees reliever, Terry De los Santos deep into the right field stands with David Hamilton on base, courtesy of one of four Yankee errors. Earlier, Anthony had singled home Hamilton in the sixth, tying the game at 3-all. The rookie sensation finished 2-for-5, scoring twice, with three RBI. He’s batting a solid .286 with five home runs and 26 RBI in 210 at-bats.
Boston’s win moved them to within a 1/2 game of the Yankees and the top wild card. New York is 4 1/2 games behind Toronto in the AL East with the Red Sox hot on their heels. The Red Sox are 6-1 against New York this season. The series continues Friday.

One of the reasons the Giants have slumped to 4th place - 12 games back - in the NL West is the disappointing season that Justin Verlander is having. The former Cy Young award winner give up seven runs in 4 1/3 innings in this game, dropping him to 1-10 with an ERA of 4.64.
The win left the Padres a game behind the Dodgers in the division with a weekend series between the two beginning Friday in San Diego. San Francisco heads to Milwaukee for three with the Brewers.
NL Streaks: Phillies, won 4; Giants, lost 3.
August 20, 2025 MLB Players of the Day
After the Tigers put up six runs in the first inning, starting pitcher, Charlie Morton, went out and just threw strikes, allowing just three hits, one of which was a two-run homer by Mauricio Dubon in the 4th inning.

Houston retained its top spot in the division despite having lost four in a row as the second place Mariners have dropped five straight and are 1 1/2 games back. The Tigers have a commanding 10-game lead in the AL Central as all other teams in the division suffered losses Wednesday.

Schwarber went 3-for-5 with five RBI and smacked his 45th home run of the season, taking the NL lead from Shohei Ohtani, who left the Dodgers’ 8-3 loss at Colorado after being hit with a line drive on his right thigh.
Ohtani was pitching at the time, and had the worst outing of his career, giving up nine hits and four earned runs over four innings. The extent of his injury and how long he may be out are as yet undetermined, though manager Dave Roberts said he expects the 2024 MVP to be in the lineup when the Dodgers meet San Diego on Friday. The Dodgers are off Thursday.
The Phillies extended their NL East lead to 6 1/2 games over the Mets, while the Mariners continued to trail Houston by 1 1/2 in the AL West. The Mets and Astros were both on the losing end Wednesday. Houston was swept by Detroit and has lost four straight while the Mariners have dropped five in a row.
