March, April Players of the Day

May 31, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

In five at-bats, Junior Caminero socked two doubles and a pair of home runs, propelling Tampa Bay to a 16-3 blowout at Houston.

The Rays victimized five Houston hurlers with 18 hits. Caminero scored four times and drove in five runs himself, three of them coming on his 8th-inning, three-run shot. He's been especially brutal against Houston pitching during this four-game series. On Thursday, he went 3-for-6 with a single, double and home run, driving in six runs. The Astros kept him in check throughout Friday's 2-1 win for Houston, rendering him hitless in three at-bats.

The win improved Tampa Bay's standings in the AL East, now tied with Toronto, 5 1/2 behind the Yankees, who were pummeled by the Dodgers Saturday. Houston fell back 1/2 game behind Seattle, after taking the AL West lead for a day on Friday. The series concludes Sunday at Houston.

AL Streaks: Blue Jays, won 4; Athletics, lost 5.

National League

When Max Muncy singled in a run in the first inning for a 2-0 lead, it was just the beginning of the onslaught he and his fellow Dodgers would inflict upon the visiting Yankees in an 18-2 trouncing by Los Angeles.

The Dodgers banged out 21 hits against a parade of eight Yankee pitchers, including a pair of three-run homers by Muncy, his fifth and sixth of the season and 200th and 201st of his career and three other Dodgers would homer in the game. Muncy finished 3-for-6, scored three times and drove in seven.

Aaron Judge did his part for the visitors, homering twice, but it was not nearly enough to counter the offensive outburst by the Dodgers, who have taken the first two games of the re-match between last season's World Series foes with the finale set for Sunday night.

Both teams lead their respective divisions, the Yankees up 5 1/2 on the Blue Jays and Rays, while the Dodgers hold a three-game edge of San Diego and are four up on the Giants.

NL Streaks: Brewers, won 6; Rockies, lost 7.

Framber Valdez could taste first place in the AL West, throwing a complete game on just 83 pitches as the Astros cooled off Tampa Bay, 2-1, Friday night in Houston.

Valdez improved to 5-4 on the year, fanning nine in the process and getting another 14 outs on ground balls, including one double play. Valdez faced just two over the minimum, dealing with 29 Tampa batters with poise and determination. After giving up a home run to leadoff hitter Jose Caballero to start the game, Valdez set down the next twelve Rays in order. He allowed just three hits and one walk over the nine innings. The Astros were unable to score until they finally plated a run in the 8th. Yanier Diaz won the game with a walk-off solo homer in the ninth, rewarding Valdez's effort.

The win vaulted the Astros past the Mariners - 12-6 losers to Minnesota - into first place in the AL West, with a 1/2-game lead over Seattle. Tampa Bay has won eight of their last nine entering the game, the second of four in Houston, after Tampa Bay won the opener, 13-3, Thursday.

AL Streaks: Tigers, won 5; Athletics, lost 4.

National League

Christian Yelich broke open a close game with a 5th-inning three-run home run and added a solo shot in the 9th to lead the Milwaukee Brewers past the Phillies, 6-2, Friday in Philadelphia.

With the Brewers clinging to a 2-1 lead, Yelich connected for the 11th time this season, going opposite field with two aboard, giving the Brewers control of the contest. In the 9th, Yelich yanked a low, inside pitch into the right field stands for his 12th of the season and fourth RBI of the game. Yelich finished 3-for-5 on the night, improving his RBI total to 38 as the Brewers closed ground on both the Cubs ad Cardinals in the NL Central.

Milwaukee crept to within 5 1/2 of the Cubs. St. Louis is second, three games back. The Phillies have lost two straight but continue to lead the Mets by one game in the NL East. Game two of the three-game series is Saturday.

NL Streaks: Brewers, won 5; Rockies, lost 6.

The Rays have gotten hot of late, winning eight of their last nine, including Thursday's 13-3 walloping of Houston in the opener of a four-game series in Tampa.

Third baseman Junior Caminero led the Tampa Bay assault on Houston pitching, going 3-for-6 with a three-run homer, a single, double, and six RBI.

Caminero put the Rays up 3-0 with an RBI single in the 5th, but Houston tied the game after six innings. Tampa scored five times in the 7th, capped by Caminero's homer. He added a two-run double in the 8th to put the game out of reach. The second year pro has 11 homers and 32 RBI on the year, already exceeding his totals from last season. In his last seven games, Caminero, 21, is batting .414 (12-for-29) with three home runs and 12 RBI.

Tampa Bay's recent success has them in sole possession of second place in the AL East, though they are a distant 6 1/2 games behind the Yankees. Houston remain 1/2 game behind Seattle in the West as the Mariners fell to the Nationals, 9-3, Thursday. Game two of the Houston-Tampa Bay series is Friday.

AL Streaks: Yankees, won 5; Angles, Red Sox, lost 5.

National League

Atlanta split a double bill in Philadelphia Thursday, dropping the opener, 5-4, but rebounding for a 9-3 trouncing of the Phillies in the nightcap. Austin Riley, who was 2-for-5 in the first game, doubled in a pair of runs and scored in the 4th inning, singled and scored in the sixth, and launched a 409-foot homer in the 7th with a man aboard as Braves' starter Chris Sale cruised through six innings on two hits, fanning eight, to even his record at 3-3.

Riley's home run was his ninth, the four RBI upping his total to 32.

With the Phillies taking the series two games to one, they remain on top in the NL East, two games better than the Mets. Though the Braves are in third place, they are 9 1/2 out at 26-29.

Atlanta, which had made it past .500 on May 18, has dropped six of its last eight and return home Friday to host the Red Sox on Friday. Winners of 11 of their last 13, the Phillies remain home for a three-game series with Milwaukee beginning Friday.

American League

Andrew Benintendi went 3-for-4 with two singles and a solo home run (6), drove in four runs and scored twice as the White Sox topped the Mets, 9-4

The win did little to improve Chicago's plight. They remain in last place in the AL Central, 18 1/2 behind the Tigers. The Mets dropped another game further behind the Phillies in the NL East, now two back.

Having taken one of three from the Mets, the White Sox seek further success when they travel to Baltimore for three with the O's, starting Friday. The Mets open a three-game series with the Rockies on Friday at New York's Citi Field.

AL Streaks: Yankees, won 5; Red Sox, Angels, lost 5.

Even though the Marlins are in last place in the NL East, they still have enough quality to pose problems for opponents, as they did Wednesday, out-slugging the Padres, 10-8, Wednesday in San Diego.

Batting as the DH from the leadoff spot, rookie Agustin Ramirez was a one-man wrecking crew against San Diego pitchers, going 4-for-5, banging out three singles, his seventh home run of the season, and four RBI while scoring twice. The Marlins' top three batters were a combined 10-for-15 against San Diego arms.

The loss left San Diego two behind the Dodgers in the NL West. The Padres remain at home for three games with Pittsburgh beginning Friday, while the Marlins return to Miami, hosting the Giants for three, also starting Friday.

NL Streaks: Cubs, Brewers: won 4; Rockies, lost 5.

May 27, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Jose Altuve went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and two singles, leading the Astros to a 11-1 rout of the visiting Athletics.

Altuve found his stroke in consecutive at-bats, smoking a solo shot to left in the 3rd inning and a two-run bomb in the 4th before singling and scoring the final run for Houston in the 6th. Altuve, 35, led the AL in hits from 2014 through 2017, and is 56-for-206 this season, batting .272.

Houston, winners of three straight, has them 1 1/2 behind Seattle in the AL West. The A's have plummeted to the basement of the division, eight games out. The two-game series wraps up Wednesday.

AL Streaks: Yankees, won 4; Angels, Red Sox, lost 4.

Christian Yelich's 10th inning, walk-off grand slam powered the Brewers to their third straight win and the Red Sox to their fourth straight loss with a 4-1 victory Tuesday in Milwaukee.

Not only did Yelich deliver the winning blow for the Brewers, he also doubled, stole third and scored the tying run in the 9th off Boston closer Aroldis Chapman. Prior to the 9th, Milwaukee batters had been held to just three hits by a string of five Boston hurlers.

Milwaukee has taken the first two games of the series and will be seeking the sweep at its conclusion Wednesday. The Brewers trail the Cubs by 6 1/2 in the NL Central, tied for third with the Reds. St. Louis is alone in second place, three games out.

NL Streaks: Mets, won 4; Rockies, lost 4.

May 26, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

Traded from the Cardinals to Tampa Bay mid-season last year, eventually winding up in Baltimore, Dylan Carlson may have had some extra motivation when St. Louis visited the Orioles to open a three-game series Monday.

Playing center field and batting 8th, Carlson singled and scored in the 3rd inning and crushed a three-run homer in the 4th, as the Orioles defeated St. Louis, 5-2, for their third straight win.

Prior to his home run, Carlson singled in the 3rd, stole second and scored on Jackson Holliday's single to center. Carlson has had limited playing time in Baltimore, appearing in just 17 games this season, but he's started the last three games and is 5-for-12 with two homers and five RBI over that span.

The Orioles remain in last place in the AL East, while the Cardinals dropped to three behind the Cubs in the BL Central. Game two of the series is Tuesday.

AL Streaks: Rays, won 6; Red Sox, Angels, lost 3.

Leading off for the Dodgers in the opener of a three-game series at Cleveland, Shohei Ohtani smoked the first pitch he saw into the Progressive Field right field stands to give LA an early lead in their 7-2 win over the Guardians on Monday.

Ohtani's home run was his major league-leading 19th, and while he didn't have another hit in the game, he walked twice and scored two runs, helping the Dodgers build their advantage.

The Dodgers lead the NL West by two games. Cleveland is chasing Detroit in the AL Central, tied with Minnesota for second place, five games out. The series resume Tuesday.

NL Streaks: Mets, won 3; Rockies, lost 3

Losing three straight to the Guardians, AL Central leader Detroit had no reason to worry. Not when 2024 Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal was slated to start the series finale Sunday. All Skubal did was throw a complete game, two-hit shutout, whiffing 13, for a 5-0 Tiger victory to close out the series. Skubal needed just 94 pitches - 72 of which were strikes - to keep the Tigers four games up on Cleveland and Minnesota in the division race. Skubal had a perfect game through five innings, did not walk a batter and retired the last eight in order, six by strikeout.

Skubal improved to 5-2 on the year with an ERA of 2.49. His 92 strikeouts leads the AL. New York's Carlos Rodon is second with 80.

The Tigers open a series with San Francisco Monday while the Guardians head home to take on the visiting Dodgers.

AL Streaks: Rays, won 5; Blue Jays, lost 3.

Seiya Suzuki continued his assault on major league pitchers Sunday, going 3-for-4, with a single, double and an 8th inning, three-run homer that broke an 8-8 tie and delivered an 11-8 decision in favor of the Cubs at Cincinnati Sunday.

Devers went 4-for-6, smashing a three-run homer in the 6th inning, and singling in a run in the 8th before swatting a grand slam as the Sox scored 13 times in the frame. His 47 RBI leads the majors.

Armstrong went 3-for-5, adding a double to his impressive slugging. His six RBI left him one shy of teammate Seiya Suzuki's 46 RBI that leads the National League. Suzuki also went 3-for-5, with a single, double, and a three-run homer.

Ohtani is tied with Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber for the league lead in home runs and with New York's Aaron Judge for the major league lead.

The Dodgers took the series, two games to one, and host the crosstown rival Angels in a weekend series starting Friday, while the A's head up the coast for three games at San Francisco. The Dodgers hold a one-game lead in the NL West over San Diego. The 22-22 A's are two games out of first in the AL West.

Kody Clemens socked a three-run homer in the top of the 8th inning, extending the Minnesota Twins' winning streak to 10 games with a 8-6 victory at Baltimore, completing a sweep of the double-header. The Twins won the first game, 6-3.

The Twins' streak is the longest this year in the majors, coming on the same day that the Cardinals' nine-game winning streak was snapped in a 2-1 loss at Philadelphia.

Clemens' home run was just his second of the year, but it came at a most opportune time, with the Twins trailing 6-5. His round-tripper reversed the score, keeping the win streak alive and well. The Minnesota utility man has had just 28 at-bats this season, but is 4-for-14 recently, with 2 homers and six RBI.

The Twins were 13-20 when their streak started. With most of the AL Central teams breathing fire, they've only been able to reach fourth place, 5 1/2 behind the Tigers, who lead Cleveland by 3 1/2 and the Royals by 4 1/2. The Orioles, meanwhile, have lost eight of their last 10, securing last place in the AL East, nine games behind the division-leading Yankees. The twins and O's wrap up their series Friday at Camden Yards.

AL Streaks: Twins, won 10; Red Sox, lost 3.

Just hours after the Phillies had snapped St. Louis' win streak at nine games, Maysn Wynn and the Cardinals got a bit of revenge, whipping the Phillies, 14-7, in the second half of their double bill.

St. Louis pounded out 19 hits, most of them victimizing Phillies starter Aaron Nola, who dropped to 1-7 with the loss, allowing 12 hits and 9 earned runs over just 3 2/3rds innings.

Wynn's solo homer in the 4th off Nola was one of four hits for the Cardinals' shortstop in five at-bats. It broke a 6-6 tie and put St. Louis ahead fro good. Wynn, who drove in three runs and scored three times, had run-scoring singles in the 8th and 9th and scored on a Brendan Donovan double in the 3rd and on a wild pitch in the 8th.

The Cardinals, just one game behind the Cubs in the NL Central, get a day off Thursday before finishing their road trip with a weekend series at Kansas City. The Phillies, alone in second in the East, 2 1/2 behind the Mets, are also idle Thursday and remain at home. They open a three-game set with the Pirates Friday.

In one of the most exciting games of the season, including four ties and seven lead changes, Javier Baez finally sent Tigers' fans home happy, socking a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 10-9 Detroit win over visiting Boston.

Beaz's extra-inning smack was his second of the game. His sixth-inning, three-run shot put the Tigers temporarily ahead, 6-4. The Red Sox tied it up in the 8th on David Hamilton's two-run dinger. Both teams scored a run in the 10th before Kristian Campbell put the Red Sox ahead 9-7 in the top of the 11th. Baez finished with six RBI, giving him 27 for the season. He also scored on a botched pick-off in Detroit's third.

With the win, the Tigers share the best record in the majors with the Mets, both at 28-15, and have a 2 1/2-game lead on Cleveland in the AL Central. Boston remained in second place in the East, three games back of the Yankees, who lost at Seattle Tuesday, 2-1, in 11 innings.

Detroit will be seeking a sweep of the three-game set on Wednesday.

The Braves reached the .500 level for the first time this season with a 5-2 win over Washington Tuesday in Atlanta. Rookie catcher Drake Baldwin was instrumental in Atlanta's 21st win of the season, tying the game in the 4th inning with a two run homer - his fourth - adding insurance by scoring in the 6th and 8th. He finished 3-for-4 with a single, double and homer, three runs and two RBI. Baldwin, drafted by the Braves in the third round of the 2022 draft, is batting .329, with 4 homers and 11 RBI in 80 at-bats.

The Braves struggled out of the gate to an 0-7 start, but have improved, especially at home, where they are 14-6. They have gained third place in the NL East, 6 1/2 behind the Mets. Philly holds second, three games out. Washington, 17-26, is 11 back.

Atlanta will be looking for their third straight over Washington Wednesday. The four-game series concludes Thursday.

In the opener of a three-game series in San Diego, the Padres held a 5-3 lead entering the 9th, which was erased as their bullpen fell apart, allowing six runs in the inning, including a Taylor Ward grand slam as the Angels came from behind for a 9-5 victory.

Ward singled earlier in the game, going 2-for-5 on the night. His four RBI upped his season total to 21.

San Diego's meltdown began innocently enough, with Robert Suarez, the major league leader in saves with 18, struck out Matthew Lugo to open the frame. An infield single, wild pitch and four consecutive walks by Saurez plated two runs to tie the game, sending Suarez to the showers.

Alek Jacob came on to get Jorge Soler on a swinging strikeout, but couldn't get past Ward, who ripped his ninth homer of the season 350 feet down the left field line for the lead and the game.

Game two of the series is Tuesday.

Corbin Carroll touched up Jason Verlander for a pair of solo homers, proving the winning margin in support of Merrill Kelly's (4-2) seven innings on the mound, allowing just one run on 8 hits, striking out 8 as Arizona won the first of three at San Francisco Monday night, 2-1.

Carroll's solo shots came in the 3rd and 5th innings, and were the right fielder's 12th and 13th of the season, putting him one behind Philly's Kyle Schwarber in the National League's home run category. Both were belted leading off the innings. Schwarber's 14 is tied for the most in the majors with New York's Aaron Judge. Carroll has 30 RBI, putting him among the major league leaders.

Arizona remains in fourth place in the NL West, 5 1/2 behind the Dodgers. The Giants, losers of four straight are third, 3 1/2 out, with the Padres holding second place, 1 1/2 back. Game two of the series is Tuesday.

Houston's Ronel Blanco blanked the Cincinnati Reds on two hits over eight innings, striking out 11, walking one as Houston shut out Cincinnati, 6-0, taking two of three in their only meeting with the Reds this season.

Blanco, 3-3, threw 101 pitches, 65 of them for strikes. He was particularly tough on the top four batters for the Reds, striking out each of them twice. Blanco started the game on fire, striking out the side in the first and fanning six of the first eight batters he faced. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

Yanier Diaz provided half the offense for Houston with a third-inning, three-run homer, his fourth. Shawn Dubin completed the whitewash with a scoreless ninth in relief.

With the A's losing to the Yankees Sunday, Houston moved into a tie for second place in the AL West, two games behind the Mariners, who have dropped three straight.

Houston hosts Kansas City for three games beginning Monday, while the Reds return home to meet the White Sox, the three-game series starting Tuesday. Cincinnati has lost seven of its last nine and have fallen to fourth place in the NL Central, 3 1/2 behind the Cubs.

The Rockies will try to make it two straight when they travel to Texas for a three-game series with the Rangers Monday. San Diego, which dropped a game behind the Dodgers in the NL West, will try to get back on the winning track when they host the LA Angels on Monday in the first of three.

Aaron Judge slugged his major league-leading 13th and 14th home runs - both solo shots - but the spotlight fell squarely on catcher Shea Langeliers who went 4-for-5 with a double and a three-run homer to lead the Athletics to an 11-7 triumph over the visiting Yankees.

The Yanks erased a 4-0 A's lead and were ahead, 6-4, after six, but Langeliers changed all that in the 7th with his 8th home run of the year, a 418-foot, three-run blast that put the A's back on top.

In the 8th, Langeliers extended the A's advantage to 11-6 with a two-run gap double, giving him five RBI on the night and 23 on the season.

Despite the loss, the Yankees remain on top in the AL East, though their lead is down to two games as Boston cooled off Kansas City with a 10-1 win. Toronto, three back, took down Seattle, 6-3, which also helped the A's creep to within two of the West-leading Mariners.

The A's and Yankees wrap up the series - tied one apiece - Sunday in Sacramento.

Sure, the score looked more like something one would see in the fall, from a football game, and yes, the Padres banged out 24 hits, including five home runs, but the star of the game was rookie hurler Stephen Kolek, who kept the Rockies off the board with a complete game, five-hit shutout as San Diego buried the Rockies, 21-0.

Kolek improved to 2-0 on the season, throwing 68 of 104 pitches for strikes, fanning seven while allowing two walks. The 6'3" right-hander faced 32 batters thanks to two Padres' double plays and got first strikes on 21 of them. In two starts this season, Kolek has yet to be scored upon, his first win coming just six days prior, when he blanked the Pirates over 5 1/3 innings in a 4-0 win May 4.

The Padres win put them into a first-place tie in the NL West with the Dodgers, who lost to Arizona, 3-0, Saturday. The Rockies, 6-33, and losers of 8 straight, are already 19 1/2 games off the pace.

Left fielder Jasson Dominguez became the youngest Yankee to hit three home runs in a game, propelling the Bronx Bombers to a 10-2 slaughter of the A's in the opener of a three-game series Friday at the Athletics temporary home in Sacramento.

Dominguez, 22, went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers, one in the 3rd - going back-to-back with Paul Goldschmidt - and another in the 7th inning, before launching a grand slam in the 8th, tallying seven RBI on the night as he also drove in a run with a 5th inning sac fly. The switch-hitting Dominican Republic native is batting .250 with 5 homers and 19 RBI in just 108 at-bats. He's played in 32 games this season and is moving up the ladder in Rookie of the Year consideration.

The Yankees, operating from their customary position atop the AL East, added a game to their lead over Boston, as the Red Sox dropped a 2-1 decision to Kansas City in 12 innings. The Yankees lead is now three games.

Since the advent of pitch counts and closers, complete games have become a rarity in the major leagues, but the Cardinals' Erick Fedde wasn't about to leave his fate to others, going the full nine innings in a 10-0 shutout of the Nationals, Friday night in the nation's capital.

Fedde threw 109 pitches, scattering six hits, fanning eight without walking a batter, to even his record at 3-3. While Fedde was mowing down Nationals hitters, St. Louis batsmen scored in every inning except the 2nd, 6th, and 7th.

The win was the Cardinals' sixth straight, leaving them alone in second place, just two games behind the Cubs in the NL Central. Chicago fell to the Mets in New York Friday, 7-2. The Cubs and Cardinals have yet to meet this season, but will renew their rivalry in June and July, first with a four-game series in St. Louis, the 23rd through 26th, then in a three-game weekend series July 4th, 5th and 6th in Chicago.

Bobby Witt Jr. stroked two singles, a pair of doubles stole his 12th and 13th bases of the season, propelling the Royals to a 10-0 smothering of the hapless White Sox Thursday in Kansas City, completing a four-game sweep of the AL Central's basement dwellers.

Witt, runner-up to Aaron Judge in last season's MVP voting, drove in two runs and scored twice. While he's batting a robust .325 with 23 RBI and 5 home runs, his efforts so far have been overshadowed by Judge, who is on a triple crown pace. Witt's batting average ranks 7th in the AL and his 13 stolen bases are second, behind Chicago's Luis Robert Jr.

Despite winning their sixth straight (and 15 of their last 17), KC's win only achieved moving into a second-place tie with Cleveland in the AL Central. The Guardians were idle Thursday and both squads lost ground to the Tigers, who pummeled the NL patsy Colorado Rockies, taking both ends of a doubleheader, 10-2, and 11-1. Detroit leads the division by 2 1/2 games.

The Royals host Boston for three weekend games starting Friday while the flailing White Sox (10-28) welcome in the Marlins for three.

Gabriel Moreno went 3-for-4 in Arizona's 5-3 win over the visiting Dodgers, including a 4th-inning grand slam that provided the winning margin.

Moreno's slam was his first homer of the season, to go with 9 RBI and a .253 average in 91 at-bats. Teammate Ketel Marte also homered for the first time, socking a solo shot in the 5th.

The Diamondback's victory came in the opener of a crucial four-game series with the NL West-leading Dodgers, who are one game better than the Giants and Padres and five up on the D'Backs. Facing such stiff competition, Arizona needs to at least split the series with LA if they wish to stay relevant. Game two is Friday.

Down 4-2 with the bases full and one out in the bottom of the 9th, the Angels needed a clutch hit and got one from Jorge Soler, who doubled to left field, plating all baserunners for a walk-off, 5-4 win over the visiting Blue Jays.

The win was the Angles' second straight over Toronto, taking the series opener, 8-3, Tuesday, with the wrap-up slated for Thursday. Soler, who started the game in a 2-for-19 slump, had singled earlier, going 2-0for-5 on the night. He's driven in 16 runs so far this season.

Having dropped into last place in the AL West by losing eight of nine prior to hosting Toronto, the Angels need every win they can get until star outfielder Mike Trout back from the 10-day IL. Trout suffered a bone bruise to his surgically repaired left knee in an April 30 loss to Seattle. The perennial all-star could return as early as a May 11 home game against Baltimore or the May 12 series opener at San Diego.

The Blue Jays lost their fourth straight and are tied with Tampa Bay for third in the AL East, 4 1/2 behind the Yankees.

The streak has put the Cardinals into a second place tie with the Reds and Brewers in the Central division. The trio is chasing the first place Cubs, each three games behind.

St. Louis begins a nine-game road trip beginning Friday with three games each Washington, Philadelphia, and Kansas City. The last place Pirates return home Friday for a weekend series with the Braves.

Obliterating a 3-2 San Diego lead in the seventh inning, the Yankees scored 10 runs, snapping a three game losing streak with a resounding 12-3 win over the San Diego Padres.

Aaron Judge had gotten New York on the board with his 12th home run in the 4th, but it was catcher Austin Wells who tied the game in the 7th, then put it completely out of reach with a grand slam to complete New York's barrage. Wells had gone hitless in his first two at-bats before singling home Jasson Dominguez with the tying run, then got to the plate again with the bases full and launched his 7th home run of the season. Wells' five RBI gave him 25 for the year.

Judge's solo shot tied him for the AL lead with Seattle's Cal Raleigh. The Yankee slugger is having a triple crown season, leading the league in batting at .412 and RBI with 34. The series tied a game apiece, the Yanks and Padres will play the deciding game Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

AL Streaks: Kansas City, won 4; Red Sox, Blue Jays, Orioles, Astros, lost 3.

Nick Castellanos broke open a 4-2 game with a three-run homer in the eighth and added a cushion with an RBI single in the 9th, as the Phillies pulled to within two games of the Mets in the NL East with an 8-4 road win at Tampa Bay Tuesday.

The Phillies never trailed, although the Rays kept it close, trailing 3-2 entering the eighth. Kyle Schwarber drove in Trea Turner to make it 4-2 before Castellanos drove Schwarber, Bryce Harper and himself around with his fourth homer of the year. Earlier, Schwarber had gotten the Phillies the lead with his 2nd inning solo shot, his 12th, which is tops in the National League.

Tuesday's game was the first of a three-game series in Tampa. Games two and three are set for Wednesday and Thursday. The loss dropped the Rays 3 1/2 behind the Yankees in the AL East, with Boston, 2 1/2 back, in between. The 20-16 Yankees are the only team in the division above .500.

Cole Ragans picked up his second win of the season against one loss with five innings of three-hit ball, striking out 11 White Sox batters in a 3-0 Royals win in the opener of a four-game series in Kansas City.

Ragans didn't need much support, but the Royals provided enough, scoring single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 8th inning to secure the win.

Ragans came out firing, striking out the first four and five of the first seven batters he faced and ended strong, getting all three outs in the fifth on whiffs. Four Royals' relievers kept the White Sox off the scoreboard, each tossing an inning of scoreless ball. Ragans has fanned 57 batters in 35 2/3rds innings, tied for the AL lead in that department with the Yankees' Carlos Rodon.

Kansas City has won three straight, continuing their pursuit of Cleveland and Detroit in the AL Central. As usual, the White Sox have a secure grip on last place in the division with the league's worse record at 10-25, Monday's loss dropping their road record to 3-14.

AL Streaks: Royals, won 3; Yankees, lost 3.

Despite walking two batters in the first inning and again in the 4th, AJ Smith-Shawver took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, leading the Braves to a 4-1 home win over Cincinnati.

Enyel De Los Santos finished the shoutout with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Matt Olson's two-run, inside-the-park home run in the third inning was more than enough offense for Atlanta, who have gone 16-11 since an 0-7 start to the season. Monday's contest was the first of a four-game series which extends through Thursday.

Playing center field and batting in the #9 spot for Houston, Jake Meyers went 4-for-4 but didn't hit for the cycle, he did it one better, cracking a pair of homers, a triple and a double, driving in a career-high seven runs in the Astros 8-3 win over the White Sox in Chicago.

Meyers, in his fifth season with the Astros, erased a 3-0 White Sox lead with a solo shot in the 3rd inning and a two-run triple in the 4th. Not content with merely tying the game, Meyers launched a three-run blast in the 6th and gave the fans an encore with a run-scoring double in the 8th.

Trailing 6-5 with two down in the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Stowers delivered his second home run of the game, ending it with a grand slam for a 9-6 Marlins' victory over the visiting Athletics.

The Marlins' right fielder finished the night 2-for-5 with six RBI and a hero's welcome as he crossed home plate. Stowers has six homers on the season and is among the league leaders with 25 RBI. He was traded from Baltimore to the Marlins mid-season last year.

Although still in last place in the NL East at 13-19, the Marlins snapped a six-game losing streak. The A's dropped into a tie for second in the AL West with the Astros, both three games behind the Mariners.

Cal Raleigh swatted his major league-leading 11th and 12th home runs of the season in successive at bats as the Seattle Mariners hammered the Texas Rangers, 13-1, in the opener of a three-game series in Arlington.

Raleigh's solo shot in the 4th inning gave Seattle a 1-0 lead. In the 5th, Raleigh pulled a low slider to right field for a grand slam, setting the Mariners on a pathway to their fifth straight win and a two-game lead over the Athletics in the AL West. The Mariners have beaten the Rangers all four times they've played this season.

Seattle, notoriously unproductive at the plate the past few seasons, has turned things around this year. Their 48 home runs are second in the AL to the Yankees' 54 and they are 4th in RBI behind New York, Boston and Detroit.

The teams renew their rivalry Saturday at Texas' Globe Life Field.

After dropping the opener of their four-game series to the Rockies Thursday, Robbie Ray made sure that Colorado wouldn't win another road game Friday, blanking them on two hits over seven innings in a 4-0 Giants' whitewash.

Ray fanned eight and needed just 86 pitches to notch his fourth win without a loss. HHH Birdsong pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th to complete the shutout.

With the win, the Giants continued their pursuit in the NL West. They're in third place, a game behind the Padres and 2 1/2 back of the Dodgers. The Rockies' 4-3 win on Thursday was just their second road win of the season in 17 tries.

Colorado, 6-26, is on a trajectory to finish the season 30-132, which would easily be the worst season ever for a major league team. The White Sox set the standard for mediocrity last season, losing 121 games with just 41 wins.

Detroit catcher Dillon Dingler singled in the 4th inning and again in the ninth, but his three-run homer in the top of the 8th broke a 4-4 tie and set the Tigers on a pathway to a 10-4 come-from-behind victory over the Angels.

Detroit trailed 4-2 entering the eighth in the first of four games in LA, but put up a 5-spot in the frame and Detroit's relievers secured the win with shutout ball the final two innings, sending the Angels to a sixth straight loss.

Dinlger's homer was one of four for Detroit and the catcher's fourth of the season. Dingler went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, upping his season total to 14, to go with a .291 batting average.

In consecutive at-bats, Chicago's Seiya Suzuki homered, the first giving the Cubs a one-run lead, the second, putting the Cubs ahead for good as they finished up their series in Pittsburgh with a 8-3 win, taking two of three from the Pirates.

In his major league debut, Noah Cameron took a no-hitter into the 7th inning, but Curtis Mead's one-out single in the seventh spoiled it for the 6'3" lefty from St. Joseph, Missouri. John Schreiber came on in relief to get the next two outs and the Kansas City bullpen kept the Rays off the board for the 3-0 Royals win. Vinnie Pasquantino's 2-run homer and an RBI single by Booby Witt Jr. provided sufficient offense for the Royals.

Cameron, drafted in 2021 by the Royals out of Central Arkansas, was far from perfect in his first major league start, though effective. He struck out three but walked five, getting the win for his 6 1/3 innings of work.

Kansas City arrived in Tampa Tuesday just as the Rays had won five straight, but the Royals have cooled them off, taking the first two games of the series. The game three finale is Thursday, with the Royals seeking a sweep.

Both teams occupy third place in their respective divisions, the Rays 3.5 behind the Yankees in the East while the Royals trail Detroit by three games in the Central.

Kyle Stowers had an exceptional night at the plate for Miami, with a single, double, a pair of homers and four RBI. Unfortunately, his 4-for-4 effort was not enough to offset the Dodgers' output from 17 hits and five walks as Los Angeles completed the sweep of the Marlins with a 12-7 victory.

Stowers put the Marlins on scoreboard in the fourth with his two-run homer and doubled in another run in the 6th getting the Marlins to within a run, down 4-3. In the bottom of the 6th, LA scored four more, putting the game pretty much out of reach.

Stowers, batting .323 with four homers and 19 RBI, added a solo homer in the 9th.

The Dodgers outscored the Marlins, 40-15, over the three games. Winners of five straight, LA held first place in the NL West by 1 1/2 over the Padres. Miami, at the bottom of the NL East, has lost five straight.

The Dodgers embark on a 10-game road trip starting Friday, with three in Atlanta, three in Miami and four games at Arizona. The Marlins head home for three with the A's before the Dodgers arrive.

NL Streaks: Dodgers, won 5; Marlins, lost 5.
