April 30, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

In his major league debut, Noah Cameron took a no-hitter into the 7th inning, but Curtis Mead's one-out single in the seventh spoiled it for the 6'3" lefty from St. Joseph, Missouri. John Schreiber came on in relief to get the next two outs and the Kansas City bullpen kept the Rays off the board for the 3-0 Royals win. Vinnie Pasquantino's 2-run homer and an RBI single by Booby Witt Jr. provided sufficient offense for the Royals.

Cameron, drafted in 2021 by the Royals out of Central Arkansas, was far from perfect in his first major league start, though effective. He struck out three but walked five, getting the win for his 6 1/3 innings of work.

Kansas City arrived in Tampa Tuesday just as the Rays had won five straight, but the Royals have cooled them off, taking the first two games of the series. The game three finale is Thursday, with the Royals seeking a sweep.

Both teams occupy third place in their respective divisions, the Rays 3.5 behind the Yankees in the East while the Royals trail Detroit by three games in the Central.

AL Streaks: Mariners, won 4; Angels, lost 5

National League

Kyle Stowers had an exceptional night at the plate for Miami, with a single, double, a pair of homers and four RBI. Unfortunately, his 4-for-4 effort was not enough to offset the Dodgers' output from 17 hits and five walks as Los Angeles completed the sweep of the Marlins with a 12-7 victory.

Stowers put the Marlins on scoreboard in the fourth with his two-run homer and doubled in another run in the 6th getting the Marlins to within a run, down 4-3. In the bottom of the 6th, LA scored four more, putting the game pretty much out of reach.

Stowers, batting .323 with four homers and 19 RBI, added a solo homer in the 9th.

The Dodgers outscored the Marlins, 40-15, over the three games. Winners of five straight, LA held first place in the NL West by 1 1/2 over the Padres. Miami, at the bottom of the NL East, has lost five straight.

The Dodgers embark on a 10-game road trip starting Friday, with three in Atlanta, three in Miami and four games at Arizona. The Marlins head home for three with the A's before the Dodgers arrive.

NL Streaks: Dodgers, won 5; Marlins, lost 5.

April 29, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Jorge Polanco drove in all five of Seattle's runs as the Mariners opened a two-game series with the road-weary Angels at T-Mobile Park.

Polanco homered twice, smoking a three-run shot in the 2nd inning and a two-run blast in the 7th, his 8th and 9th long balls of the season, tying him with Mike Trout and Aaron Judge, one behind Polanco's teammate, Cal Raleigh, who leads the AL with 10.

With a team high 25 RBI, Polanco is second-best in the AL, chasing the Yankees' Judge, who has driven in 29. With 28 hits, Polanco is smoking hot with a .389 batting average and a 1.242 OPS. He's done all this in just 21 games and 72 at-bats.

The Mariners' 5-3 win was their third straight, keeping them in first place, a game ahead of Houston in the AL West. The Angels were swept three straight at Minnesota, losing their fourth straight on the road Tuesday.

AL Streaks: Red Sox, Mariners, Astros, won 3; Angels, lost 4.

National League

Teoscar Hernandez took over the major league RBI lead Tuesday with 31 total, driving in four runs with a pair of doubles and two singles in five at-bats in the Dodgers' 15-2 walloping of Miami in game two of their home series with the Marlins.

Hernandez has been a critical element in the Dodgers surge to first place in the NL West, where they lead the Giants by one game and are 1.5 ahead of the Padres. The LA right fielder is batting a solid .297 and has nine home runs, one behind league-leader Eugenio Suarez of Arizona.

14-3 at home, the Dodgers will be seeking the sweep of the Marlins when they close out the series Wednesday.

NL Streaks: Reds, won 5, Rockies, lost 8

April 28, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Jose Altuve's 6th-inning two-run homer gave Houston a 4-3 lead over visiting Detroit and the Astros scored four more in the 7th, en route to an 8-5 win in the opener of a three-game series.

Altuve's home run was his fourth of the season, and he knocked in another run in the 7th with a ground out to second with runners on second and third to pad Houston's lead. The perennial Astro All-Star also singled in four at-bats, raising his batting average to .282.

Houston's win was their second straight, leaving them in sole possession of second place in the tight NL West, a game behind idle Seattle. The A's and Rangers, both 15-14, are tied for third, just a half-game behind Houston.

Detroit's loss snapped a four-game winning streak. At a league-best 18-11, they retained first place in the AL Central, 2.5 ahead of Cleveland. Game two of the series is Tuesday.

AL Streaks: Rays, won 5; Guardians, Rangers, Angels, lost 3.

National League

Brandon Nimmo singled, doubled, homered twice (a grand slam and 3-run shot), scored four runs and drove in nine as the Mets hammered the Nationals, 19-5 in Washington, DC Monday.

Nimmo's production of 9 RBIs was the most in a single game this season and tied a Mets' franchise record set by Carlos Delgado in 2008. His home runs came in consecutive at-bats. Nimmo hit the 3-run shot in the 6th inning and the slam in the 7th.

With the win, the Mets split the four-game series with Washington, but retained the best record in the majors at 20-9, first place in the NL East, 4.5 games to the good over the Phillies. Washington fell to 13-16, just a half game ahead of the last place Marlins.

Washington opens a three-game series in Philadelphia Tuesday while the Mets return home for three games with Arizona.

NL Streaks: Reds, won 5; Rockies, lost 7.

April 27, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Joe Ryan struck out 11 over seven innings of 4-hit, shutout ball and Justin Topa closed the deal with a hitless 8th and 9th inning relief stint as the Minnesota Twins completed a sweep of the visiting Angels with a 4-0 win.

Ryan was dealing throughout, getting first strikes on 20 of 25 batters he faced. 67 of his 98 pitches were strikes, evening his record at 2-2 with the win.

The Twins have struggled early this season. The three wins over LA only got them to 12-16, having them six games off the pace set by Detroit in the AL Central.

Minnesota begins a seven-game road trip Monday, with four at Cleveland followed by three games in Boston. The Angels, losers of 10 of their last 13 will try to stop the bleeding with two games at Seattle after a day off Monday.

AL Streaks: Rays, won 4; Orioles, Angels, lost 3

National League

Andy Pages stroked three singles, socked a two-run homer and drove in four runs to lead the Dodgers to a 9-2 win over the Pirates, taking two of three at home.

After the Pirates opened the game with a pair of solo homers from Andrew McCutchen and Enmanuel Valdez, the Dodgers struck for four runs in the bottom of the frame, Pages knocking in Tommy Edman to put LA up 4-2. Pages padded LA's lead with his fifth home run of the season, picking up Freddie Freeman with the two-run blast.

In the sixth, Pages singled in another run to complete the Dodgers' scoring. After a solid rookie campaign in 2024 with 13 homers, 46 RBI and a .248 average, Pages has picked up his game recently. He's on a 5-game hitting streak, going 13-for-20 with three homers and multiple hits in four of those contests, raising his average from .159 to .277.

The Dodgers kept pressure on the first place Giants, who lead the NL West by 1/2-game over Los Angeles with the Padres 1 1/2 back.

The Dodgers remain home for a three-game series with Miami, starting Monday, while the Pirates head home for three with the Cubs. That series begins Tuesday.

NL Streaks: Reds, won 4; Rockies, lost 6

April 26, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Luis Castillo (3-2, 3.62) didn't have to shut out the Marlins on one hit over six innings. His teammates scored six runs in the first and the Mariners were up 11-0 by the time he handed the ball to the bullpen in Seattle's 14-0 wipeout of visiting Miami.

Rookie third baseman Ben Williamson doubled home two in the first, knocked in another run on a fielder's choice in the fourth and singled in another run in the sixth, going 2-for-5 with 4 RBI.

Williamson, drafted by Seattle in 2023 out of William & Mary college, is batting .310 with one homer and 7 RBI in 42 at-bats and is riding a five-game hitting streak.

The whitewash moved the Mariners (15-12) into a tie for first place in the AL West with Texas. The series wraps up with the rubber game Sunday. Miami won the opener, 8-4, Friday.

AL Streaks: Royals, won 6; Orioles, Astros, Angels, lost 2.

National League

On Saturday night, Eugenio Suarez became the 19th player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game. Unfortunately, his Arizona teammates combined for just three more hits in the game and lost to the visiting Braves, 8-7, in 10 innings, on a wild pitch by Justin Martinez.

Maybe the worst part of it all was the player who scored the winning run, Matt Olson, didn't even have a hit in the contest.

For what it's worth, Suarez hit solo shots in the 2nd, 6th, and 7th, and a two-run blast in the 4th. The Diamondbacks blew a 6-2 lead in the 6th and were trailing, 7-6, when Suarez belted #4 to lead off the 9th and send it to extras. Suarez leads the majors with 10 home runs. He's knocked in 20 RBI on the year.

In the 10th, Olson, who began the inning on second base due to MLB's extra inning rule, went to third on a ground out and scored when Martinez let fly the wild one.

The Diamondbacks surrendered in order in the bottom frame, wasting the history-book lesson by Suarez, dropping to 14-13, which isn't going to cut it in the loaded NL West.

The Braves (12-14) will be looking for the sweep when the two meet up on Sunday. After an 0-7 start, the Braves have gone 12-7, winning three straight and seven of their last eight.

NL Streaks: Braves, Reds, won 3; Rockies, lost 5.

April 25, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

National League

Being the only team above .500 in the NL Central comes with some perks, like a 3.5-game lead over the 13-13 Reds, and three straight wins, with the latest coming Friday night at Wrigley Field as Colin Rea notched his first win of the season (1-0), shutting out the Phillies over five innings, sending them to their fifth straight loss in a 4-0 combined shutout.

After Rea blanked the visitors on three hits and two walks, striking out 7, a parade of four relievers each contributed a scoreless inning to complete the win.

Rea, 1 6'5" righthander from Cascade, Iowa, has had three starts in six appearances this season and also has a save to his credit. Over 18 2/3rds innings, he's only allowed two earned runs for an ERA of 0.96 with 19 Ks. Rea was 12-6 in 2024.

Game two of the series is Saturday, with the Cubs looking for four straight while the Phillies seek to get back on the winning track.

NL Streaks: Cubs: won 3; Phillies: lost 5.

American League

Kansas City extended its winning streak to five straight with a 2-0 win over the visiting Astros Friday, getting both of their scores on sac flies to back 8 innings of scoreless ball by starter Seth Lugo, who mowed down the Astros on three hits with one walk, fanning 8.

Lugo (2-3, 3.08) was ahead of hitters the entire game, getting first strikes on 22 of 27 batters he faced, needing just 94 pitches (65 strikes) for the victory.

The Royals picked up a half-game on AL Central-leading Detroit. The Tigers and O's were rained out, leaving KC in third place, 3 games back and Cleveland, also rained out Friday, 1/2-game behind the Tigers.

Game two of the series is Saturday night at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.

AL Streaks: Royals: won 5; Red Sox: lost 2.

April 24, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Seattle took the final game of their three-game series in Boston, topping the Red Sox, 4-3, winning two of three to move into a tie for first place in the AL West with Texas.

Bryan Woo (3-1) got the win, allowing two earned runs over 6 innings, the Mariners having staked him to a 4-1 lead after scoring two runs in the first and two more in the second inning. The Red Sox made the game close with single runs in the 1st, 3rd, and 8th innings, but were shut down by closer Andres Munoz, who fanned two and did not allow a hit in the 9th for his league-leading ninth save of the season.

Munoz has been near-perfect in 13 appearances this season. He has not allowed a run, giving the 26-year-old Mexican an ERA of 0.00 with 17 strikeouts.

The Mariners head to back home Friday for a weekend series with the Marlins.

AL Streaks: Royals: won 4; Blue Jays: lost 5.

National League

Mike Yastrzemski went 2-for-4, including his 4th home run of the season (a solo shot in the 3rd), scored twice and drove in a pair of runs, helping the Giants to a 6-5 win over Milwaukee Thursday.

The grandson of Hall of Fame and Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski is off to a solid start this season, batting .282 with four homers and 13 RBI.

The win put the Giants into sole possession of second place in the wildly-competitive NL West, 1/2-game behind the San Diego Padres.

Taking three of four from the Brewers, the Giants improved to 7-3 at home and 17-9 overall. Milwaukee dropped three games behind the Cubs in the NL Central at 13-13.

NL Streaks: Mets: won 7; Phillies: lost 4.

April 23, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Consistently ahead of hitters all game, Reese Olson blanked San Diego on two hits over 7 1/3 innings Wednesday, leading Detroit to a 6-0 victory over the visiting Padres.

Olson got first-pitch strikes on 21 of the 25 batters he faced, struck out seven and walked one. Improving to 3-1, Olson needed only 85 pitches to get into the eighth before turning the ball over to Tommy Kahnle, who nailed down the final two outs of the inning. Will Vest finished up with a hitless 9th, striking out two.

The Tigers' win gave them the series, 2-1, over San Diego. The two teams will not meet again this season unless it's in the World Series, a possibility, as both are leading their respective divisions. The 15-10 Tigers are 1/2-game up on Cleveland in the AL Central, while San Diego, at 17-8, is a game better than San Francisco and Los Angeles in the NL West.

Both teams get a day off Thursday and are home for the weekend, the Tigers hosting Baltimore and the Padres welcoming in the Rays.

AL Streaks: Houston: 3 wins; Toronto: 5 losses.

National League

Pittsburgh's Andrew Heaney tossed six innings of one-hit ball as the Pirates downed the Angels, 3-0, Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Heaney threw 66 of 95 pitches for strikes, fanned nine and did not issue a single walk. Heaney struck out the first six batters he faced and took a perfect game into the 5th inning, where it was spoiled on a one-out double by Travis d'Arnaud, followed by an error by shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Unfazed, the Oklahoma City lefty retired the next two batters and set down the Angels' side in order in the sixth. A trio of Pittsburgh relievers completed the shutout. Heaney improved to 2-1 with a 1.72 ERA.

Pittsburgh has taken the first two games in LA and will be looking for a series sweep when the two teams take the field Thursday.

NL Streaks: Mets: 7 wins; Phillies: 4 losses.

April 22, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

The Texas Rangers their lead in the AL West to two games over Seattle, downing the A's Tuesday night, 8-5 at the temporary home of the Athletics at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento.

After driving in a run in the first inning, Marcus Semien socked a three-run homer in the 5th to lead the Rangers, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. The Texas second baseman is off to a slow start, his home run just the second this year after raking 23 last season with 74 RBI and 29 and 100 RBI in 2023, helping the Rangers to reach and win the World Series.

Texas has won five of its last seven, while the 10-13 A's have dropped into last place after losing their second straight. The A's and Rangers meet again Wednesday for game two of the three-game series.

National League

After losing 24-2 Sunday night to close out an eight game home stand, a day off and the short trip down I-95 to start a three game series with the Nationals wasn't helpful as Mitchell Parker blanked them over eight innings on one hit in a 7-0 Washington win.

Parker (3-1) struck out four and walked two, walked Cedric Mullins to start the game, and surrendered the only hit the O's could produce to Mullins with one out in the third.

After that, Parker set down 17 straight, finishing his night with a strikeout of Jackson Holliday to close out the 8th. Parker also fanned Holliday to end the 5th inning.

Colin Poche walked two in the ninth, but Cole Henry came on to whiff Ryan Mountcastle and Tyler O'Neill to end the game.

9-13 Baltimore, losers of three of their last four, remained just a half game ahead of last place Tampa Bay in the AL East.

The Nationals have won three of their last four, but are still just one game ahead of the bottom-dwelling Braves in the NL East, at 10-13. Game two of the series is Wednesday.

April 21, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

Myers was around the plate all night, throwing 69 of 92 pitches for strikes and getting first-pitch strikes on 18 of the 23 batters he faced. He issued no walks in evening his record at 2-2. Giving up five hits overall, Myers allowed singles to leadoff hitters in both the first and sixth innings before retiring the next three batters in order on strikeouts.

The Reds dropped to 11-12 while the Marlins improved their record to 10-12. Game two of the series is Tuesday.

American League

Hunter Brown shut out the Blue Jays on two hits over seven innings, sending Toronto to its third straight loss as the Houston Astros opened a three-game series with a 7-0 whitewash.

Brown, who struck out nine batters and walked one, improved his record to 3-1, lowering his ERA to 1.16, fourth-best in the AL.

Houston reached the .500 mark at 11-11, and are just two games behind the Rangers in the AL West, but also one game out of last place. Toronto fell out of second place in the AL East, remaining two games behind the Yankees, though Boston leaped ahead with a win over the White Sox Monday and trail New York by 1 1/2.

Game two is Tuesday in Houston.

April 20, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

Max Fried became the first pitcher in the majors with four wins this season, as he blanked the Tampa Bay Rays over 7 2/3 innings Sunday, helping the Yankees to a 4-0 road win and a two game lead in the AL East.

Fried improved to 4-0 as he allowed just two hits and two walks, eventually relieved with two down in the 7th by Fernando Cruz, who picked up his second save.

Fried, who joined the Yankees this season after 8 years with the Atlanta Braves, threw 102 pitches, struck out two and lowered his ERA to a stellar 1.42.

Having taken three of four from the Rays, the Yankees continue their road trip Monday for the first of three games at Cleveland. Tampa Bay begins a six-game Western swing with three games at Arizona and three at San Diego starting Tuesday.

Leading the charge were the two players at the bottom of the order, catcher Austin Wynns, batting 9th, who stroked five singles and hit a three-run homer with six RBI in seven at-bats and #8 hitter, 3rd baseman Noelvi Marte, singled twice, doubled twice, and whacked an 8th inning grand slam, totaling seven RBI and scoring three times.

Marte, 23, who played in 66 games last season for the Reds, batting .210 with four home runs and 18 RBI, was playing in just his sixth game this season. His home run was his first of 2025 along with his seven RBI. Marte raised his batting average to .316. He was just 1-for-12 prior to Sunday.

The Reds evened their record at 11-11, and are in third place in the NL Central, a game behind Milwaukee and two back of the first-place Cubs. Baltimore dropped two of three at Cincinnati and are 9-12, just 1/2-game out of last place, currently occupied by the Rays.

The O's begin a six-game road trip Tuesday with three each at Washington and Detroit. The Reds remain on the road with three games at Miami beginning Monday.

April 19, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

It's always nice to end a game with a hit, especially when it's a grand slam in the 12th inning after you went 0-for-5 at the plate, and that's exactly what Rowdy Tellez did in Seattle's 8-4 win at Toronto..

After the Blue Jays took the first game of the series, 3-1, on Friday, Seattle kept it close in game two, tying the score at 4-all in the 7th on a Ben Williamson solo shot. The score remained tied until the 12th, when Randy Arozarena broke through with an RBI single, setting up Telez for his heroics.

The Blue Jays managed to get a run home in the bottom of the 12th, but it was far too little and far too late.

Toronto's loss kept them a game behind the Yankees in the AL East while Seattle tok sole possession of second place in the West, two games behind Texas.

The teams conclude the series Sunday in Toronto.

National League

When two lower tier teams meet up at Coors Field in Denver, there's bound to be fireworks and there were plenty on Saturday as the Nationals took the field against the Rockies after Friday's series opener was postponed.

The 11-10 win by the Nationals included 20 hits, 10 walks, five home runs, a 13-strikeout performance by Nationals' hurler MacKenzie Gore, an 8-run 7th inning by the Rockies and a breakout performance by 23-year-old Dylan Crews, who knocked a pair of two-run homers and doubled in 5 at-bats, scored four times and drove in four runs.

Crews got the party started with the first of his two dingers in the top of the second, then reached on an error and scored as the Nats plated five runs in the 4th, belted a towering 428-foot homer in the 5th, and doubled and scored in the 7th, helping Washington build a 12-2 lead, which turned out to be just enough, the Rockies scoring eight times in the bottom of the 7th.

The game ended with Mickey Moniak stranded on third base after tripling in the Rockies' 11th run as Kyle Finnegan struck out Jordan Beck, sending Colorado to its seventh straight loss and a 3-16 record, the worst in the majors.

Washington improved to 8-12, but are already 5.5 back of the Mets in the NL East, struggling along with the Braves and Marins. The Phillies trial the Mets by one game.

The two teams will play a pair on Sunday.

April 18, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Trevor Story socked a pair of 3-run homers, powering the Red Sox to a 10-3 win over the visiting White Sox in the opener of a four-game series at Fenway Park.

Story started the scoring in the opening frame with the first of his two dingers and also singled and scored in the third inning. After Chicago had scored a pair of runs, Story proceeded to put the game away with his second blast, giving the Red Sox a 9-2 edge.

The Red Sox shortstop went 3-for-4, with three suns and six RBI, upping his totals to 5 home runs, 14 RBI and a .321 batting average.

Boston improved to 11-10, dropping the White Sox to 4-15, with an 0-7 road record. Game two is Saturday in Boston.

National League

Tommy Edman stroked a leadoff homer in the first inning off Ranger starter Jacob deGrom (0-1) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto tossed seven scoreless innings to notch his third win against one loss as the Dodgers defeated Texas, 3-0, in the opener of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas.

Yamamoto (3-1, 0.93) scattered five hits, struck out 10 and issued no walks, throwing 68 of 102 pitches for strikes, keeping Texas hitters guessing all night.

Kirby Yates pitched a hitless 8th and Tanner Scott allowed two hits in the ninth but managed his seventh save of the year.

Yamamoto joins Sonny Gray, Robbie Ray, Nick Pivetta, teammate Anthony Banda and a host of others with a major league-leading three wins. His 0.93 ERA is tops in the National League and his 38 Ks are tied for second with Logan Webb (Giants). Philly's Zack Wheeler leads with 41.

LA's win got them to within a half game of the division-leading Padres in the NL West. The Rangers have a 1.5-game lead over the Angels in the AL West. Game two of the series is Saturday.

April 17, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

After dropping the first game of their three-game series in Cincinnati, 8-4, on Tuesday, the Seattle Mariners bounced back to take the next two, concluding their visit to Great American Ballpark with a thrilling, 10-inning 11-7 victory.

As is often the case, Randy Arozarena was one of the heroes for Seattle, tying the game with a solo home run after Cal Raleigh got them within a run with his solo shot. The back-to-back jacks tied the game at 7-apiece.

Seattle took a 5-3 lead in the 8th, until Jake Fraley's grand slam turned the tables in the bottom half of the inning, putting the Reds up 7-5.

In the 10th, the Mariners plated four, including a pair on Arozarena's double to left. After reliever Casey Legumina retired the Reds in order in the 9th, Adres Munoz finished the job with a hitless 10th.

The win got Seattle above .500 at 10-9, leaving them in second place in th AL West, two back of the Rangers. The Reds remained tied in third place with St. Louis in the NL Central. The Cubs lead the division by a game over the Brewers.

Both teams hit the road Friday, with the Reds heading to Baltimore and the Mariners off to Toronto.

National League

Oneal Cruz socked a leadoff home run in the bottom half of the first inning and Andrew Heaney made it stand up tossing 7 1/3 scoreless innings as the Pirates downed the Nationals, 1-0, Thursday night at PNC Park.

Heaney, who came to Pittsburgh in the offseason after two years with the Texas Rangers, picked up his first win of the season evening his record at 1-1 with a splendid 2.13 ERA. The lefty hurler has pitched very well in three of his four starts this season, allowing one run in each of his first two starts with no decisions, going five innings at Miami and seven against the Yankees. His lone loss came in a 5-2 defeat at Cincinnati, April 12.

Pittsburgh improved to 6-4 at home, taking 3 of 4 from Washington. The Pirates remain at home, hosting a weekend series with Cleveland. 7-12 Washington head to Colorado for a three game series with the Rockies, who have the worst record in either league, at 3-15.

April 16, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Baseballs were flying out of ballparks coast to coast on Wednesday. Aaron Judge socked his 7th of the season to clinch a 4-3 win for the Yankees, first place in the AL East and a three game sweep of Kansas City. Seattle's Cal Raleigh homered from both sides of the plate in the Mariners' 5-3 win at Cincinnati, the latter his 100th career long ball.

There were three grand slams delivered on the day, the first from Baltimore's 21-year-old second baseman, Jackson Holliday, in the Orioles' 9-1 wrecking of the Guardians at Camden Yards..

Holliday launched his second home run of the season in Baltimore's second inning, and the O's just kept trucking around the bases, helped by five walks from Cleveland hurlers. The Orioles left just two men on base, improving to 7-10.

Cleveland's loss left them at 9-8, 1/2-game behind Detroit in the AL Central. The series is tied a game apiece; the rubber match set for Thursday night.

National League

In Washington, the Pittsburgh Pirates took a 6-1 decision over the Nationals thanks to the 2-hit pitching over seven innings by starter Bailey Falter and a 7th inning grand slam from Oneil Cruz.

Cruz's homer was his third of the season, helping the Pirates to their second win in the four-game series which concludes Thursday.

Both teams are mired in the depths of their respective divisions. Washington (7-11) has been saved from last place in the NL East only because the Braves have gotten off to a 5-13 start.

The 7-12 Pirates have not been able to string together many wins; they are 2.5 behind the 9-9 Reds and Cardinals in the NL Central, all chasing Milwaukee (10-9), a game behind division-leader Chicago (12-9).

The third and final grand slam of the day came off the bat of Michael Toglia in the Rockies 8-7 loss at LA. The Dodgers scored seven first-inning runs including Freddie Freeman's 3rd homer of the year and Shohei Ohtani's 6th, both solo shots. The Rockies gave it a go, but fell to 3-15, the worst record in the majors.

April 15, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

The Athletics and White Sox were two of the three worst teams in the AL last season. The A's lost 93 games, but the White Sox set a record by losing 121. Halfway through April, while the 7-10 A's are still playing well enough without a true home field, the Sox seem to be on track for a last place finish in the Central, dropping to 4-12 after the A's bludgeoned them 12-3 Tuesday in Chicago.

Tyler Soderstrom led the 13-hit assault with a pair of three-run homers, the first getting the A's an early lead in the opening frame, his second putting the game away with a 9-3 lead. The A's first baseman also singled and scored as the A's plated three more in the 9th.

Soderstrom is leading the majors with 8 home runs and is second in the AL with 17 RBI behind Aaron Judge, who has 20. His .328 batting average is 7th league-wide. He also leads the majors in total bases, with 50.

Now in his third season with the A's, the 23-year-old from Turlock, California appears on track for a breakout season.

Game two of the series is Wednesday.

The Athletics are currently playing home games at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, California. The team plans to eventually move to Las Vegas, but opening day for their future ball park - as yet unnamed - isn't until 2028. Stay tuned.

Corbin Carroll launched a sixth inning grand slam, propelling the Diamondbacks to a 10-4 win in the opener of their three-game series with the Marlins in Miami Tuesday.

Carroll had already got the scoring started for Arizona with an RBI double in the 2nd inning, and came home on Geraldo Perdomo's three-run blast. The Arizona leadoff hitter went 2-for-5 with 5 RBI on the day.

Carroll's 6th home run of the season has him tied with five others for the NL lead. His 15 RBI is tied for ninth, that category led by the Giants' Wilmer Flores, who has 21.

The Diamondbacks improved to 10-7 with the win, which would often be good enough to lead a division. However, in the loaded NL West, Arizona is mired in 4th place, 3.5 behind San Diego. The Padres are off to a blistering 14-4 start, 1.5 better than the 12-5 Giants and 13-6 Dodgers.

Could all three wild cards come from the same division. Right now, that appears to be possible, but the season is still very young.

Unlike the National League, which has five teams with 10 wins or more, the Detroit Tigers became the first AL team to register double digits in the W column. Tarik Skubal, last season's Cy Young award winner, quieted the home crowd at American Family Field, blanking the Brewers over seven innings en route to a 9-1 Tigers' victory.

Skubal needed just 91 pitches (64 strikes) to even his record at 2-2 and keep the Tigers in first place in the AL Central. Skubal allowed just four hits and did not walk any Brewer batters.

The Tigers got Skubal a working lead early on, scoring two runs in each of the first and second innings, four in the 4th and a single run in the 5rh. Kenta Maeda finishd up, allowing the Brewers' only run in the 9th.

The Tigers lead the AL Central by 1.5 games over Cleveland. Milwaukee's loss dropped them into fourth place in the NL Central, trailing division leader Chicago by two games. Game two of the series is slated for Tuesday.

National League

Atlanta's gotten off to a very rocky start, at 5-11 and in last place in the loaded NL East, but the Braves scored their second road win of the season in 11 tries with an 8-4 win in Toronto.

Austin Riley provided the power with a pair of home runs and five RBI. Riley belted both homers to left center, a two-run shot in the 3rd and a 3-run blast in the 5th, which traveled an estimated 444 feet and put the Braves up 8-0.

Riley's home runs were his second and third of the season. He leads the team in RBI with 11. Atlanta has scored just 57 runs in 16 games, the lowest in the league other than Colorado (43).

The Blue Jays, who dropped back into second place in the AL East, 1/2-game behind the Yankees, scored in the late innings but failed to challenge the Braves' large lead.

Game two of the series is Tuesday at the Rogers Centre.

San Diego maintained its 1.5-game lead over the Giants in the NL West Sunday, completing a shutout sweep of Colorado with a 6-0 victory as Michael King tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout of the visiting Rockies.

King improved to 3-0 on the year as teammates supported his outing with 11 hits. The 29-year-old from Rochester, New York, fanned 8, walked just one and never let a runner past first base. The effort was King's first complete game and shutout of his career, spanning seven seasons in the majors.

King needed 110 pitches to get the job done. Taking a perfect game into the 5th, he allowed the first of two singles with one out in the frame, but then set down 11 straight before giving up a walk with two down in the 8th, ending the inning with a strikeout of Zac Veen. King gave up his second hit with one down in the ninth, but his fielders picked him up, ending he game with a 5-6-3 double play.

The Padres improved their record to 13-3, the best record in baseball, sending the Rockies the other way. Colorado's 3-12 record is the worst in the majors. The Padres didn't allow a run during the three-game series, shutting out the Rockies 8-0 and 2-0 in the first two games.

The Padres welcome in the Cubs Monday for a three-game set. Chicago took two of three from the Dodgers over the weekend and have a two game lead over Milwaukee and Cincinnati in the NL Central.

More than a few baseball pundits consider the Seattle Mariners opportunities in the AL West to be limited by their lack of hitting. While their pitching staff is among the best in baseball, they're not exactly smoking at the plate.

That surely wasn't the case as the Mariners took their second straight from Texas Saturday, with a 9-2 victory.

Seattle banged out 11 hits, helped by four walks and a third inning passed ball which allowed Cal Raleigh to score from third, one of three times the Mariner catcher would cross the plate.

The Mariners scored four runs in the 3rd, Raleigh cracked a solo home run (his 4th) in the 5th inning and Seattle plated four more in the 7th. Raleigh scored again on a two-run double by Rowdy Tellez. Seattle got its usual strong pitching performance from Bryan Woo, who allowed one run, scattering six hits over seven innings, fanning seven.

The series concludes Sunday in Seattle as the 7-8 Mariners hope to complete the sweep of the 9-6 Rangers.

National League

The Chicago Cubs continue to lead the NL Central by one game over the Brewers after absolutely crushing the Dodgers Saturday in Los Angeles, 16-0, the most lopsided shutout in Dodger history.

Among Chicago's 21 hits were four by first baseman Michael Busch, who singled, doubled twice, homered, scored four times, and drove in three runs.

The Cubs homered four times, including two from Carson Kelly, and smashed five doubles in the rout. The Dodgers blanked the Cubs, 3-0, Friday, so the series rests on Sunday's rubber game, which will be ESPN's featured Sunday Night Baseball broadcast starting shortly after 7:00 pm ET.

Chicago is 10-7. The 11-5 Dodgers fell 1.5 games behind the Padres in the NL West.

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Gavin Sheets each homered and Nick Pivetta tossed seven innings of shutout ball as the San Diego Padres opened their three-game series with the Colorado Rockies with an 8-0 rout Friday night.

Pivetta (2-1, 1.59) picked up his second win of the season, allowing three hits and one walk, striking out 10. San Diego scored six runs in the fifth inning, which were more than enough for Pivetta, who allowed a one-out double in the first inning, but then set down eight in a row. A lead-off single by Colorado in the 4th amounted to nothing, as Pivetta set down another eight in order into the sixth inning. The 6'5" righty from Victoria, British Columbia, struck out the first two batters in the 7th and finished his night's work with a ground out to end the inning, throwing 62 of 88 pitches for strikes.

Yuki Matsui and Alek Jacob worked hitless 8th and 9th innings respectively. Matsui struck out the side in the eighth. Jacob fanned two of the three batters he faced.

The Padres improved to 11-3, remaining 1/2-game ahead of the Giants and Dodgers in the NL West. Game two of the Padres-Rockies series is Saturday.

The Astros bombed the visiting Angels, 14-3, in the opener of their weekend series in Houston Friday, knocking out 16 hits off four LA pitchers including Yanier Diaz's 5th inning grand slam, handing the Angels their second straight loss.

The Diaz slam was his first home run of the season as the Astros plated six in the 5th inning. In the sixth inning, Diaz doubled in another run and scored later on an error. He also singled to go 3-for-5 with 5 RBI on the night.

Off to a slow start with a .132 batting average, Diaz hit .299 in 2024 with 16 home runs and 84 RBI.

The Angels remained 1/2-game behind the Rangers in the AL West while 6-7 Houston and 6-8 Seattle both gained ground on the leaders. Game two of the series is Saturday.

There are Angels singing in the heavens after Los Angeles hammered the Rays in Tampa Bay Thursday, 11-1, including two homers each by Mike Trout, Taylor Ward, and center fielder Jo Adell, who launched his pair in the same inning, the Angels' 8-run 5th, a solo shot flowed by a three-run blast.

Adell's homers were his first of the season, Ward, his second and third, and Trout now has five.

As far as is known, three players of the same team homering twice in one game has happened more than a few times. Baseball Reference cites some instances. MLB.com's Brian Murphy notes that it's the third time Angels' teammates have done it.

According to Ed Eagle at MLB.com, Adell became the 61st player to homer twice in the same inning, noting that Fernando Tatis of the St. Louis Cardinals is the only player to ever hit two grand slams in the same inning (April 23, 1999).

The Angels' win earned them the series, 2 games to one, and kept them 1/2-game behind the Rangers in the AL West. The Angles have taken two of three in each of their four series this season.

Next up for the 8-4 Angels are three games at Houston over the weekend followed by three games at Texas beginning Tuesday. The 5-7 Rays have lost six of their last seven and host a three-game set with Atlanta starting Friday.

After dropping the first two games of their home series with the Brewers, 7-1, and 17-2, the 3-9 Rockies gained some measure of revenge by taking game three, 7-2., mostly off the bat of leadoff hitter, Brenton Doyle.

Doyle singled, doubled, and homered in five at-bats, driving in five runs and scoring twice. His solo homer to start the game got the Rockies on the board in a hurry. The Brewers tied the game in the 4th, but Doyle singled in a run to put the Rockies up 2-1 in the 7th and stroked a bases-clearing double in the 8th and later scored on Zac Veen's RBI double.

Doyle is batting .302 with three dingers, 12 RBI, and 28 total bases, leading the Rockies in each category.

Colorado opens a three-game series in San Diego Friday while the Brewers head to Arizona for three with the Diamondbacks.

Chourio socked his fourth home run of the season in the fifth, a three-run, 413-foot blast after the Rockies had come back with a pair of runs. From that point on, the Brewers just kept piling on the runs, putting up their highest run total of the season, reaching to within 1/2-game of division-leading Chicago in the NL Central.

Chourio's five RBI gives him 16 on the season, tying him for the league lead with Teoscar Hernandez of the Dodgers and the Cubs' Kyle Tucker. The Milwaukee left fielder is batting .315

The Detroit Tigers have won five straight and surged to the top in the AL Central with a 7-4 record after Tarik Skubal blanked the visiting Yankees over 6 innings and Brant Hurter closed out the game with three more scoreless frames in a 5-0 Detroit whitewash Tuesday.

Skubal, the 2024 AL Cy Young Award winner, allowed four hits and fanned six before turning the ball over to Hurter, who needed just 40 pitches to complete the game and earn his second save of the season.

The win was Skubal's first of the season, after taking losses in his first two outings. He was backed by four Detroit home runs, three of them solo shots in the 4th inning off Yankee starter Carlos Carrasco by Spencer Torkelson, Zach McKinstry, and Dillon Dingler. Kerry Carpenter added a solo shot in the 5th.

The loss was New York's third straight, leaving them 1/2-game back of Toronto in the AL East. The Blue Jays have taken two straight from the Red Sox as the Yankees have lost the first two of their three-game series in Detroit, which concludes Wednesday.

The Tigers and Yankees, both playoff participants in 2024, will not meet again until a September series in New York.

National League

After starting the season 9-1, the world champion Dodgers have dropped three straight, the last two to the Nationals after Washington took the second of their three game series with the visiting Dodgers, an 8-2 blowout.

Designated hitter, James Wood, provided the bulk of the offense, smacking a pair of two-run homers, one in the 1st inning, the second in the 4th. In between, Wood received a bases-loaded walk that put the Nationals up 3-0. His second homer of the game - and fourth of the season - put the Nat ahead 8-0. The Dodgers scored on solo homers of little consequence in the 5th and 8th.

Wood has 10 RBI on the season, his second in the majors. In 2024, Wood batted .264 with 9 homers and 41 RBI in 295 at-bats with the Nationals.

Washington improved to 4-6 with the win, while the Dodgers dropped to 9-4, tied for second place in the NL West with the Giants. San Diego leads both by 1/2-game.

The Yankees have won three straight after banging out 14 hits in Saturday's 10-4 win at Pittsburgh.

All nine Yankee batters had at least one hit. Leadoff batter Paul Goldschmidt had three, but at the bottom of the order, center fielder Trent Grisham had two that counted the most, a third inning solo shot and a three-run homer in the fifth that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead with one being of the bat.

The Yankees added three more in the frame on Anthony Volpe's bases-clearing double and would not relinquish the lead as three New York relievers no-hit the Pirates over the final four innings.

Grisham came to the Yankees from San Diego after the 2023 season and batted just .190 (34-179) last year. The native of Burleson, Texas is off to a solid start in 2025, with three homers, seven RBI and a .471 average in seven games.

The 6-2 Yanks have control of first place in the AL East, 1 1/2 games better than Toronto. Pittsburgh sank to last place in the NL Central, at 2-7. The Yankees will be seeking the series sweep Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh.

Texas Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi tossed the season's first complete game, a 1-0 shutout of the Cincinnati Reds, one day after the Reds had hammered the Rangers, 14-3.

Eovaldi, who was 12-8 with a 3.80 ERA last season for the Rangers, fanned 8 and allowed just four hits without issuing a single walk, throwing 70 of 99 pitches for strikes. The Reds were only able to produce singles off the Texas ace, who improved to 1-0 in his second start of the 2025 season.

Taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning, the no-no bid was spoiled by the first batter in the fifth, Gavin Lux, who was erased by a double play after Eovaldi struck out Jeimer Candelario for the first out of the inning.

The Rangers' sole run was provided by Wyatt Langford, who launched his second homer of the season with two down in the first inning.

Texas improved to 4-2, while the Reds dropped to 2-3. The teams conclude their three-game series on Wednesday, April 2, at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Batting ninth, 30-year-old Cubs' catcher, Carson Kelly, took full advantage of his at-bats, becoming the first player in baseball history to hit for the cycle in the month of March as the Cubs spoiled the Athletics' home opener with an 18-3 rout.

Kelly didn't get started with his big night until he stroked a solo lead-off homer down the left field line in the fourth inning. He had walked in the second as the Cubs had already built a 4-0 lead.

In the Cubs' fifth, Kelly swatted a bases-loaded, seeing-eye single up the middle, plating two. After doubling to off the wall in left-center in the sixth inning, scoring and walking again as the Cubs added six runs, Kelly completed the historic feat by legging out a triple off the wall in right center, driving in his fifth run of the game.

Including the pair of walks, Kelly reached base on all six of his plate appearances, scored three times and drove in five.

According to Sportradar, the 18 runs scored by the Cubs were the most by any team in a home opener since 1925.

The Cubs and A's play the second of their three game series on Tuesday.

The Yankees were at it again on Sunday.

A day after pounding Milwaukee, 20-9, with nine home runs, the Bronx Bombers belted four more in a 12-3 romp, as Aaron Judge left the Yankee Stadium yard for the fourth time this season with a two-run shot in the first and Jazz Chisholm Jr. knocked out a pair - a two-run blast in the third inning and a three-run rip in the seventh.

Chisholm finished with three hits in four at-bats, three runs and five RBI, upping his batting average to .417.

Last season, Chisholm was acquired from Miami in late July, just prior to the trade deadline. He batted a combined .246 with 24 home runs and 73 RBI. Eight of his homers and 23 RBI were with the Yankees over the season's final two months.

Nick Pivetta tossed seven innings of 1-hit ball as the Padres completed a four-game sweep of the Braves Sunday with a 5-0 win in San Diego.

Pivetta, who struck out four and did not allow a walk, gave up a sole single leading off the Braves' third, but induced a fielder's choice and double play to end the inning. After that, the 6'5" righty cruised through the next four innings, retiring 12 straight.

Last year, Pivetta was 6-12 with a 4.14 ERA with the Boston Red Sox. Now in his eighth season, Pivetta is 57-71 in 179 starts.

With the opening series sweep, the Padres are keeping pace with the 5-0 Dodgers in the NL West, trailing by 1/2 game.

San Diego hosts Cleveland in a three game series starting Monday, while the Braves head up the coast to Los Angeles to start a three game set with the Dodgers.

Springs threw 55 of 83 pitches for strikes and retired 10 in a row at one point. Three A's relievers worked the final three innings, keeping the Mariners off the board. The Mariners host the A's Saturday and Sunday in the four-game, season-oping series.
