July 31, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

As July ends, divisional and wild card races are heating up. Two of the teams deeply involved are the Rangers and Mariners, which opened their four-game series in Seattle tied at 57-52, both chasing the Astros in the West and very much alive for wild card spots.

Entering Thursday’s game, Texas had put up a 9-3 record since the All-Star break, but they were stymied by Seattle starter, George Kirby, who blanked them over six solid innings.

Cal Raleigh socked his 42nd home run of the season, breaking Mets’ catcher Todd Hundley’s 1996 record for home runs in a season by a switch-hitting catcher as the Mariners prevailed in the series opener, 6-0.

Raleigh leads the majors in long balls, and his 88 RBI are also tops, one ahead of teammate Eugenio Suarez, who joined the Mariners on Wednesday in a trade with Arizona. The Rangers and Mariners continue with game two of their four-game series on Friday. Seattle trails Houston by 4 1/2 in the AL West with the Rangers a game behind them.

AL Streaks: Tigers, won 4; Rays, lost 3.

National League

There was only one game in the National League Thursday, but it was a doozy.

Ozzie Albies went 4-for-6 - a double and three singles - scoring twice and driving in two runs, both of them in a wild eighth inning, as the Braves plated eight for a seemingly-insurmountable 11-3 lead.

The Reds, however, weren’t about to surrender. In the bottom half of the 8th, they roared back with eight runs of their own to tie the Braves, highlighted by a pair of three-run homers by Austin Hays and Spencer Steer. After a scoreless 9th, Marcel Ozuna ended the slug-fest in the 10th inning with a game-winning sac fly for a 12-11 Atlanta victory.

The Braves and Reds will be back at it Friday in Cincinnati before heading to Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee for Saturday’s series finale, billed as the “Speedway Classic ’25”. The game will be the first by MLB in the state of Tennessee and is expected to break attendance records, with more than 85,000 tickets already sold.

Hall of famers Johnny Bench and Chipper Jones will throw out ceremonial first pitches. The game will be televised live on FOX at 7:00 pm ET.

NL Streaks: Padres, won 5; Giants, lost 6.

American League

Jarren Duran went 3-for-5, with a single, double, and his 11th home run of the season, scoring three times and driving in four, boosting the Red Sox to a 13-1 rout of the Twins, Wednesday in Minnesota.

Duran, one of the hottest hitters since the All-Star break, singled and scored in the 5th, hit a two-run home run in the 6th and doubled and scored again as Boston piled on five more runs in the top of the 9th. Duran is batting .379 with two homers and nine RBI in his last seven games.

Boston took the series, two games to one, and heads back to Boston to fave Houston starting Friday. They are in third place in the AL East, five games out, with the Yankees just ahead, four game behind the Blue Jays.

The Twins dropped to 12 back in the AL Central, and appear to have resigned to give up on making the playoffs as they are 5 1/2 games behind the final wild card slot with five other teams ahead of them. The Twins open a three-game series at Cleveland that starts Friday.

AL Streaks: Tigers, won 4; Rays, Twins, Mariners, lost 2.

National League

Yu Darvish got his first win of the season, as he held the Mets scoreless on two hits over seven innings, as the Padres completed a three-game sweep with a 5-0 win, Wednesday in San Diego.

Darvish, who had been knocked around in his prior four starts since returning from the injured list, entered the game with an ERA of 9.18 and three losses. He was quite efficient against New York, throwing just 76 pitches, 54 of them for strikes. He fanned seven and did not issue any walks. The 38-year-old right-hander gave up a one-out single in the first inning, retired the next 13 batters in order before a single with two down in the 5th, and finished by retiring the next seven straight.

The Mets didn’t get a baserunner past first until Brandon Nimmo’s 9th inning double off reliever Robert Suarez, who left him stranded to end the game.

The Padres have won five straight and have a solid grip on second place in the NL West, three games behind the Dodgers. The Giants are six more games behind San Diego, who host St. Louis after a day off Thursday. The Mets hold a slim 1/2-game lead over the Phillies in the East and head back to Gotham for a three-game series with the Giants starting Friday.

NL Streaks: Padres, Pirates, won 5; Giants, lost 6.

July 29, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Riley Greene doubled twice, homered, scored three runs and drove in three in five at-bats, leading the Tigers to a 12-2 rout of Arizona, Tuesday in Detroit.

Green’s home run came in the 5th inning with a man aboard and was his 26th of the season. His 84 RBI is the third-most in the AL, behind Cal Raleigh’s 87, and Aaron Judge, with 85.

Detroit’s win was their second straight over the Diamondbacks and third straight overall. Leading the AL Central by nine games over Cleveland, the Tigers will be seeking the sweep when the series concludes Wednesday.

AL Streaks: Orioles, won 5; Blue Jays, lost 4.

National League

In Tuesday’s 9-3 win over the Cubs, Milwaukee’s Andrew Vaughn went 3-for-4, drove in a run with a sac fly in the 2nd inning, knocked an RBI single in the 5th and put the game out of reach with a grand slam in the 6th.

Vaughn, who was traded from the White Sox to the Brewers earlier this season, had a career-high six RBI, as the Brewers took their second straight against the visiting Cubs and now lead the NL Central by two games over Chicago. Since joining the Brewers on July 7, Vaughn is .375/.439/.771, with 5 home runs and 21 RBI.

Absolutely red-hot, the Brewers have won three straight, eight of 11 since the break, and recently had an 11-game winning streak that carried through the All-Star break. Since July 6, they’ve gone 15-3. The series with the Cubs concludes Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee.

NL Streaks: Padres, won 4; Giants, lost 5.

July 28, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

The Tigers may be coming out of their mid-season funk, winning their second straight game after dropping 12 of 13 through the All-Star break, thanks to the five-hit, shutout seven innings turned in by rookie starting pitcher Troy Melton in Monday’s 5-1 win over the visiting Diamondbacks.

Melton (1-1, 4.50) kept Arizona batters in check, facing just 24 batters as his teammates turned three double plays. Melton struck out five and did not issue any walks.

The victory in the first game of their three-game series left the Tigers nine games up on Cleveland in the AL Central. Arizona, having given up on the season and actively looking to move personnel prior to Thursday’s trade deadline, dropped to 51-56, 11 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.

AL Streaks: Orioles, won 3; Astros, lost 5.

National League

Desperate to stay relevant in the NL wild card race, St. Louis got a huge performance from starter Andre Pallante Monday night, as the right-hander stopped the Marlins on one hit over seven stellar innings in a 7-1 Cardinals’ win.

Pallante had a no-hitter through five innings, broken up by Miami’s first hit, a single to right by Graham Pauley to open the Marlins’ 6th. Unfazed, Pallante set down the next six in order, prior to turning the ball over to the bullpen for the 8th and 9th. Miami scored a run in the 9th, but it was far too little to overcome the St. Louis lead. The Cardinals plated five in the 7th to put the game out of reach.

At 55-53, the Cardinals are 3 1/2 games out of the third wild card and nine games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. The Marlins (50-55), having cooled off since going 6-2 after the All-Star break, lost its second straight, are 11 games behind the Mets in the East division and may be looking to deal a player or two.

NL Streaks: Nationals, Pirates, Padres, won 3; Giants, lost 4.

July 27, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

The Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak and avoided being swept at home by Toronto, helped by Gleyber Torres, who got thing started for Detroit with a 3rd-inning, 3-run homer, his 10th of the season, off Blue Jay starter, Max Scherzer.

With Jack Flaherty blanking Toronto on five hits over six solid innings, the Tigers maintained their lead, culminating in a 10-4 victory in Detroit.

Torres added an RBI single in the 8th inning as Detroit ran up the score, adding seven runs in the frame. The win left the Tigers eight games ahead of Cleveland and 8 1/2 up on Kansas City in the AL Central. The Blue Jays hold a 5 1/2-game lead on the Yankees in the East.

The Tigers, 2-8 since the All-Star break, host Arizona in a three-game series starting Monday. The Blue Jays, who are 8-2 since the break, stay on the road, starting a four-game series Monday in Baltimore.

AL Streaks: Rangers, won 6; Astros, Rays, lost 4.

National League

Despite being in last place, the Pittsburgh Pirates have one of the best pitchers in the majors in Paul Skenes, who twirled six scoreless innings on Sunday, leading the Pirates to a 6-0 win over visiting Arizona.

Skenes (6-8, 1.83) fanned nine and issued only one walk, throwing 99 pitches. The Diamondbacks failed to score for the second straight game and scored just one run in the three-game series, winning Friday’s game, 1-0.

Arizona, no doubt having given up on the season, have been dealing players to contenders over the past few days. Speculation is swirling around third baseman, Eugenio Suarez, who would solidify any number of contenders. The D-Backs head to Detroit on Monday to open a three-game series, while the Pirates head to San Francisco for three games.

NL Streaks: Mets, won 7; Braves, lost 5.

July 26, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Kansas City’s Jonathan India didn’t have a great day at the plate until Saturday’s game against Cleveland went into extra innings. India had gone 0-for-4 until he came to the plate in the bottom of the 10th with the Royals down 3-2. With two men on base, that’s when India made up for his four prior outs, blasting a 414-foot home run to walk off the Royals over the Guardians, 5-3.

Not known as a power hitter (he mostly bats leadoff), the big strike was just his fifth home run of the season, and the three RBI gave him 30 on the year, but the belt in extra innings showed determination and grace under pressure. The home rum came off Guardians’ closer, Emmanuel Clase, one of the best in the business, and gave the Royals a leg up in the first game of their double-header.

The Royals subsequently dropped the second game, 6-4, evening the series at a game apiece with the rubber match Sunday. The two Central division foes are each closing in on the Tigers, who have lost six straight and are seeing their once-insurmountable lead gradually erode. The Guardians are seven back; the Royals trail by 8 1/2.

AL Streaks: Rangers, won 5; Tigers, lost 6.

National League

Sometimes, great efforts are unrewarded and unnoticed, but what Atlanta’s Michael Harris II did in Saturday’s 6-5, 10-inning loss to Texas deserves attention.

Harris was 3-for-3 when he came to the plate to lead off the 9th inning with the score tied, 4-all. Not only was he having a perfect day at the plate, but he was on the verge of hitting for the cycle. He had already tied the game in the 6th with a solo homer, and having already homered, doubled, and tripled, all he needed was a single to etch his name in the record books. Instead, when he sliced a drive down the left-field line, he wasn’t thinking about hitting for the cycle, he was thinking about winning the game. Harris raced right through first, and second, winding up at third base with his second triple of the day and later scored on Sean Murphy’s pinch-hit sac fly.

That put the Braves up, 5-4, but Texas scored a run in the bottom of the 9th and walked off for the win on Marcus Semien’s RBI single in the 10th. The loss left the hard-luck Braves down 2-0 in the series with the finale Sunday in Atlanta. The Braves are 16 games off the pace in the NL East, while the Rangers won their fifth straight and are five behind Houston in the AL West.

Harris finished 4-for-4, scored three runs and drove in two. No cycle, and no win, either.

NL Streaks: Mets, won 6; Braves, lost 4.

July 25, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Nick Kurtz singled and scored in the 1st, socked an opposite-field, two-run homer in the 2nd inning, doubled in another run and scored again in the 4th and he was just getting started as the Athletics buried the Astros, 15-3, at Houston.

The rookie’s next three at-bats were other-worldly. After an opposite-field solo mash to left in the 6th and another solo rip to right in the 8th, Kurtz capped off his incredible night with a three-run blast to left in the 9th, his fourth home run of the game, crossing home plate for the sixth time and tallying eight RBI on his historic night.

Kurtz finished 6-for-6 and tied or set a few records. He is the first rookie in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game and his 19 total bases broke the A’s franchise record of 16 held by Jimmy Foxx from July 10, 1932 at Cleveland. He also set a new American League record, topping Texas Rangers’ slugger Josh Hamilton, who totaled 18 on May 8, 2012 at Baltimore with four home runs and a double.

Kurtz tied Shawn Green’ major league record of 19 total bases for the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 23, 2002 at Milwaukee. Green also had four homers and six hits. Kurtz and Green are the only players in MLB history with six hits in a four-homer game.

Kurtz, 22, the fourth player chosen in the 2024 draft out of Wake Forest, has been the best hitter in the majors in July, ranking first in batting average (.425), on-base percentage (.494), slugging percentage (1.082), runs (22), doubles (13), homers (11) and RBIs (27).

He extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and has hit 23 home runs in 66 games.

The A’s have taken two straight in Houston, though the Astros continue to lead the AL West by five games over Seattle. The A’s are in last place, 17 games out. The series continues Saturday and concludes Sunday.

AL Streaks: Rangers, won 4; Tigers, lost 5.

National League

On Friday night, Kyle Schwarber banged out two home runs, singled, scored three times and drove in four runs as the Phillies opened a three-game series in New York with a 12-5 romp over the Yankees.

The first of Schwarber’s two home runs - both of which came with Trea Turner on base - was also his 1,000th major league hit, and tied the game at 2-2. Giancarlo Stanton put the Yankees back in front, 3-2, with a solo homer in the 6th, but Schwarber singled and scored as the Phillies plated three in the 7th for a 6-3 lead.

After the Yankees scored two in the bottom of the 7th, Schwarber socked his second home run for an 8-5 lead and the Phillies piled on four more in the 9th to put the Yankees away.

Schwarber’s pair of dingers tied him with Arizona’s Eugenio Suarez for second in the NL in home runs, with 36. LA’s Shohei Ohtani leads the league with 37.

NL Streaks: Mets, won 5; Padres, lost 4.

July 24, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

The leaders of the AL East and Central divisions opened a four-game series Thursday in Detroit, and the Tigers made the mistake of pitching to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and paid for it as Toronto took the opener, 11-4.

Guerrero went 3-for-5, with a pair of singles and a double, drove in two runs and scored twice. Detroit led 1-0 into the sixth, when Guerrero got the Blue Jays on the board, doubling in George Springer. Ernie Clement socked a three-run homer, Joey Loperfido went back-to-back with a solo shot and all of a sudden it was 5-1. Guerrero singled in another run and scored in the 7th as the Blue Jays added four more runs, putting the contest out of Detroit’s reach.

Toronto is 6-1 since the All-Star break and holds a 4 1/2-game lead on the Yankees. The Tigers lost for the 10th time in their last 11 outings, but still lead the Central by eight games over Cleveland. The series resumes Friday.

AL Streaks: Rangers, won 3; Tigers, Angels, lost 4.

National League

After Willson Contreras doubled in Brendan Donovan in the first inning to get the Cardinals on the board, the same pair each socked three-run homers off San Diego starter, Yu Darvish, who went to the showers after just 3 1/3 innings in the Cardinals 9-7 win over the Padres.

Donovan’s home run was his 9th. For Contreras, his 14th, as he drove in four runs to up his RBI total to 61.

The game was the opener of a four-game series in St. Louis, critical to both teams chasing leaders in their respective divisions along with wild card possibilities. Currently, the Padres - 5 down to the Dodgers in the NL West - hold the final wild card spot at 55-48. St. Louis, which has fallen nine games behind Central division leader, Milwaukee, is 2 1/2 games out of the wild card, at 53-51. The series runs through Sunday.

NL Streaks: Mets, won 4; Padres, Diamondbacks, lost 3.

July 23, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Kansas City got all their runs on two-run homers in an 8-4 win over the Cubs Wednesday afternoon in Chicago. Tyler Tolbert and Salvadore Perez each hit one; Vinnine Pasquantino belted a pair of two-run shots and also doubled and scored as the Royals took two of three on the road.

Pasquantino’s first home run came in the 1st inning with a man aboard, putting the Royals up 2-0. His 5th-inning smash made it 6-2 and pretty much put away the Cubs.

Kansas City is still under .500, at 50-53, but hold third place in the AL Central, 10 games behind the faltering Tigers, who have lost three straight and 9 of their last 10. The Royals head home where they will host Cleveland for three games starting Friday. The Cubs fell a game behind Milwaukee, who topped Seattle Wednesday to take over first place in the NL Central. After a day off Thursday, the Cubs head across town to play three with the White Sox.

AL Streaks: Guardians, Astros, won 4; A’s, lost 4.

National League

Nick Lodolo twirled a four-hit complete game shutout Wednesday in Washington, D.C., blanking the Nationals for a 5-0 Reds’ win.

Lodolo (8-6, 3.08) was around the plate all game, throwing 76 of 105 pitches for strikes and getting first-pitch strikes on 23 of 30 batters. He did not allow any walks while fanning eight and was thoroughly dominant the entire nine innings.

Cincinnati avoided being swept after dropping the first two games with the Nationals, the win leaving them 8 1/2 back of Milwaukee in the NL Central in third. The Cubs are one game out, in second. The Reds will be back home Friday for a three game series with the Rays. The last place Nationals hit the road for Minnesota after a day off Thursday.

NL Streaks: Mets, won 4; Diamondbacks, lost 3.

July 22, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Milwaukee’s 11-game winning streak came to an abrupt end in Seattle Tuesday, as Logan Gilbert stopped the Brewers on two hits over 6 1/3 innings and Cal Raleigh’s major league-leading 39th home run provided just enough offense as the Mariners downed the Brewers, 1-0.

Raleigh’s 6th-inning solo shot was all Gilbert and a parade of four relievers would need for the win. Gilbert (3-3, 3.07) had his best outing of the year, striking out the side in the opening frame and fanning 10 in all. Perfect through four innings, Gilbert allowed only two singles, one by Jackson Chourio to lead off the 5th and another by Christian Yelich with one down in the 7th, after which he was relieved.

Matt Brash, Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier, and Andres Munoz held the Brewers hitless the final 2 2/3 innings, leaving the Brewers tied with the Cubs atop the NL Central division. Seattle remained in second place, five behind Houston in the AL West

AL Streaks: Guardians, Astros, won 3; A’s, lost 3.

National League

Phillies’ hurler, Christopher Sanchez allowed just four hits, including a 4th-inning solo home run to Rob Refsnyder, going the full nine innings for a complete game, 4-1 victory over the Red Sox

Sanchez improved to 9-2 on the year, matching his career high with 12 strikeouts while walking none, throwing 75 of 106 pitches for strikes while lowering his ERA to a stellar 2.40. After allowing the home run, Sanchez finished strong, allowing just two infield singles from the 5th inning through the 9th.

The victory kept the Phillies a half game ahead of the Mets, atop the NL East while the Red Sox dropped their second straight on the road, falling six games behind Toronto in third place in the AL East. The BlueJays lead the Yankees by three games in the division. The series wraps up Wednesday with Philadelphia looking for the home stand sweep.

NL Streaks: Mets, won 3; Reds, lost 3.

July 21, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Salvador Perez smashed a pair of two-run homers as the Royals clobbered the Cubs, 12-4, in the opener of a three =-game series in Chicago.

After Chicago scored four in the second inning, Perez launched the first of his homers to get the Royals to within a run in the 4th. KC scored four runs in the 5th and another in the 7th before Perez put the game completely out of reach at 10-4 with his second two-run bomb.

The win left Kansas City 11 games out in the AL Central, in third place behind the Tigers and second place Cleveland, who are 10 back. Chicago’s loss was critical, dropping them into second place in the NL Central, as Milwaukee won its 11th straight.

AL Streaks: Blue Jays, White Sox, won 4; A’s, Mariners, Rays, lost 2.

National League

At 44-55, the Braves don’t seem to be headed in the right direction, so one has to wonder if they’ll be looking to ship out some players prior to the July 31 trade deadline.

One that probably won’t be going anywhere is Drake Baldwin, who drove in six runs in Atlanta’s 9-5 win over the slumping Giants Monday in Atlanta.

After the Giants scored in the top of the 1st, Baldwin responded with the first of two doubles, this one coming with the bases full, which he cleared, for a 3-1 Atlanta lead. He later scored in the inning. It was 5-1 Atlanta after one.

In the 4th, Baldwin singled in two more and scored again, and he cracked his second double in the 6th driving in the last of Atlanta’s runs, going 3-for-5 with 2 runs, and 6 RBI. The 24-year-old rookie catcher/DH appears to be a long-term solution behind the plate for Atlanta. In 207 at-bats, he’s batting .290 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI.

The Braves are 12 1/2 back of the Phillies in the AL East and not likely to make the post-season. San Francisco lost its sixth straight, falling seven games off the pace set by the Dodgers in the NL West.

NL Streaks: Brewers, won 11; Giants, lost 6.

July 20, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Garrett Crochet scattered eight hits and allowed just one run over six innings, and Wilyer Abreu mashed a pair of home runs, as the Red Sox avoided being swept with a 601 win over the Cubs Sunday in Chicago.

Abreu socked a two-run homer in the 7th inning to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 Boston lead and added a solo shot in the 8th after Alex Bregman’s three-run pinch hit home run put the Red Sox further ahead.

Abreu’s homers were numbers 19 and 20, his three RBI giving him 55 on the year. Crochet improved to 11-4 with the win. Boston heads to Philadelphia Monday to open a three-game series with the Phillies, while the Cubs will host Kansas City for three at Wrigley.

Boston’s win left them in third place in the AL East, five behind the Blue Jays, with the second place Yankees three game out. Chicago fell into a tie for first in the NL Central with the Brewers, winners of 10 straight.

AL Streaks: Blue Jays, White Sox, won 3; Rays, Mariners, Rangers, A’s, lost 1.

National League

Xander Bogaerts launched a grand slam in the top of the first, leading the Padres to an 8-1 romp over the Nationals in Washington, D.C., Sunday.

Bogaerts’ sixth home run of the season made life easier for Padres’ starter Nick Pivetta, who worked six strong innings to improve to 10-2.

The Padres took two of three from the Nat and find themselves just 3 1/2 behind the Dodgers in the NL West after Milwaukee swept LA over the weekend. Washington continues to languish in the NL East cellar, 17 games out. The Padres head down the coast Monday for three games with the Marlins before playing four at St. Louis. Washington hosts the Reds for three, starting Monday.

NL Streaks: Brewers, won 10; Giants, lost 5.

July 19, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Determined to keep pace with AL East-leading Toronto, the Yankees got big efforts from the bottom half of the order in a come-from-behind 12-9 win at Atlanta Saturday.

Anthony Volpe homered twice and drove in four runs from the 7-hole, and, batting just in front of him, Trent Grisham socked a 9th-inning grand slam and drove in five runs.

The victory kept the Yankees in second place, three games behind the Blue Jays. Atlanta fell further behind in the NL East where they trail the Phillies by 12 1/2 games. The three-game series, tied at a game apiece, concludes Sunday in Atlanta.

AL Streaks: Mariners, won 5; Tigers, lost 6.

National League

After winning the All-Star game on Tuesday with a three-homer showing, Kyle Schwarber was back to work, smashing a 6th-inning grand slam to propel the Phillies to a 9-5 win over the Angels Saturday in Philadelphia.

Schwarber came to the plate with the bases full and his squad down 4-3, turning the game around with one swing of the bat. Bryce Harper added a two-run shot in the 9th to ensure the win, giving the Phillies some breathing room in the NL East with a 1 1/2-game lead after the Mets fell to Cincinnati. Schwarber’s home run was his 32nd. The four RBI from the game have him at 74 on the season.

The series concludes with the rubber game Sunday.

NL Streaks: Brewers, won 9; Giants, lost 4.

July 18, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

National League

Fresh off an All-Star game appearance, Kyle Stowers socked a two-run homer in his first at-bat and finished Miami’s 8-7 win over the Royals Friday with a walk-off two-run shot in the 10th.

Stowers’ two home runs gave him 21 on the season, upping his RBI total to 59. In addition to his two dingers, Stovers singled in another run in the 3rd inning.

Miami, one of the hottest teams in the majors just prior to the All-Star break, won their third straight and picked up a game on both of the NL East leaders, the Phillies and Mets, both of which were defeated Friday. Miami is 9 1/2 behind the Phillies. The Mets are just 1/2-game off the pace. Kansas City is 12 back of the Tigers in the AL Central, in fourth place.

NL Streaks: Brewers, won 8; Nationals, lost 5.

American League

Yandy Diaz delivered a third inning grand slam and Junior Caminero scorch a pair of home runs as the Rays grounded the Orioles, 11-1, Friday at Tampa Bay.

Caminero, who was the AL starting third baseman at the All-Star game, got the Rays on the board early with his three-run homer in the first inning. Diaz’s slam put the Rays up 10-0. Caminero completed Tampa Bay’s scoring with a solo homer in the 6th, going 3-for-5 overall. His two homers were his 24th and 25th of the season. He has 64 RBI.

The win kept the Rays relevant in the AL East, 5 1/2 behind Toronto, with the Yankees and Red Sox in second and third place, respectively. Baltimore continues to bring up the division rear, 12 1/2 out. The series continues Saturday.

AL Streaks: Mariners, won 4; Tigers, lost 5.

July 13, 2025 MLB Players of the Day

American League

Nathan Eovaldi pitched into the 8th inning, leading the Texas Rangers to a 5-1 victory at Houston Sunday.

Eovaldi (7-3, 1.58) finally handed the ball over with two outs in the 8th inning. Shawn Armstrong mopped up the final four outs to secure the win. Striking out eight and walking one, Eovaldi allowed five hits and a single earned run in his last mound appearance before the All-Star break. His 1.58 ERA leads major league starters, though he doesn't qualify officially, having worked just 91 innings so far this year. The two-time All-Star is 3-0 with a 0.48 ERA in July.

The Rangers finish the first half with hope for a better performance after the break. They're a game under .500 at 48-49, in third place in the AL West, 8 1/2 behind Houston. Texas took two of three in the series at Houston. The Astros hold a five game lead on Seattle in the division.

AL Streaks: Red Sox, won 10; Rays, Tigers, lost 4.

National League

Kyle Stowers went 5-for-5 with a pair of singles and three home runs, powering the Miami Marlins past the Orioles, 11-1, Sunday afternoon at Camden Yards in Baltimore.

Stowers touched up Baltimore start, BBB young with a solo shot in the 2nd, and two two-run blasts in the 3rd and 5th, driving in six runs for the game when he singled in the 8th.

14-6 since June 22, the Marlins continue to improve as MLB heads into the All-Star break. They are in third place in the NL East, 10 1/2 behind the Phillies. Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction.

It was Byron Buxton bobblehead day at Target Field in Minneapolis, so, the Twins' leadoff hitter decided it would be appropriate to hit for the cycle.

Buxton went 5-for-5 in Minnesota's 12-4 win over Pittsburgh, leading off the 1st inning by beating out an infield ground ball. Single. Done.

In the 2nd, Buxton tripled and scored, getting out of the way what most baseball addicts consider the most difficult part of the cycle. Buxton's ground rule double, which drove in two runs, came in the 3rd inning. By then, everybody in attendance knew that Buxton needed a home run to complete the rare achievement. In the 5th, Buxton singled, but was left stranded.

In the Twins' 7th, Buxton crushed an Andrew Heaney offering 427 feet to dead center. Cycle complete. It was the first cycle ever at 15-year-old Target Field, Buxton becoming the 12th Twins' player to accomplish the feat. According to Ed Eagle at mlb.com and the Elias Sports Bureau, 349 players have hit for the cycle, including once in the post-season by Boston's Brock Holt in game 3 of the 2018 ALDS vs. the Yankees.

The win left the Twins in second place in the AL Central, trailing the runaway Tigers by 11 1/2 games. Pittsburgh continues to occupy its usual position in the NL Central basement.

AL Streaks: Red Sox, won 9; Rays, Tigers, lost 3.

Matthew Boyd turned in a masterful performance Saturday at Yankee Stadium, shutting out the New Yorkers in their home park on four hits over eight innings, as the evened the series at a game apiece with a 5-2 win.

Boyd notched his 10th win against just three losses, lowering his ERA to an excellent 2.34, second-best in the NL, behind Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes (2.01). Around the plate all game long, Boyd needed just 85 pitches (65 for strikes) to get through the 8th, striking out six without walking a batter. His 10 wins ties him with Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta for most in the NL.

The win kept the Cubs in first place in the NL Central, just a game up on Milwaukee, winners of six straight. The Yankees failed to pick up ground on the Blue Jays, who lost to the A's, 4-3. Toronto is two games up on the Yankees in the AL East. The Cubs-Yankees series concludes Sunday.

Carlos Rodon pitched eight strong innings of shutout ball and Cody Bollinger gave his former team a taste of what they were missing, socking three home runs and driving in six as the Yankees blasted the Cubs, 11-0, in the opener of a three-game series in New York.

Bellinger was traded from the Cubs to the Yankees after a lackluster 2024 in which he hit 18 homers and drove in 78 runs. His totals from Friday have him at 16 and 54 with much of the season still ahead.

Rodon improved to 10-6 and the Yankees kept pace with the Blue Jays, winners over the A's Friday 7-6. Toronto has a two-game edge on the Yanks in the AL East. The Cubs have seen their NL Central lead shrink to just one game ahead of Milwaukee.

Murphy's homer were his 14th and 15th of the season, helping the Braves to a win in a troubling season in which they are still trying to find a winning formula. Atlanta is just 41-52 as the All-Star break approaches, in fourth place in the NL East, 12 1/2 out. St. Louis failed again to pick up ground on the Central division-leading Cubs, who were routed in New York Friday. St. Louis is third in the Central, but 5 1/2 behind. Soderstrom got the A's on the board in the 1st inning with his 16th home run of the season, a three-run shot off Braves' starter, Spencer Strider. The Braves came back to tie the game and eventually take a 4-3 lead in the 7th on Ozzie Albies' solo homer. After Nick Kurtz returned the favor with a solo shot of his own in the 8th, the teams went to extra innings, with Soderstrom coming up big with his third hit of the game, a single to center that plated the game-winner.

Soderstrom finished 3-for-5 with four RBI. The A's host Toronto over the weekend in a three-game series prior to the All-Star break. Atlanta closes out the first half of the season in St. Louis.

Sidelined most of June due to injury, Bryce Harper is getting his swing grooved, as evidenced by his 4-for-6 effort in Philadelphia's 13-0 rout of the Giants Wednesday in San Francisco.

Harper added a solo homer in the 4th to his three doubles, drove in a run and scored three times, as the Phillies broke the first-place tie in the NL East with the Mets, who were rained out in Baltimore.

Harper is batting .259 with 10 home runs and 35 RBI, and is an essential element to the Phillies offense, usually batting third or fourth. Kyle Schwarber socked his 29th home run of the season - a three run shot - in the 8th. The Phillies victimized Giants' starter Justin Verlander, who lost his seventh decision without a win (0-7). Leading off the bottom of the 1st, Lawrence Butler drove the first pitch he saw off Braves' rookie starter Didier Fuentes into the right field gap and steamed around the bases for an inside the park home run, starting off a A's on a 10-1 rout of Atlanta Tuesday in Sacramento.

Fuentes gave up two traditional two-run homers in the inning for a 5-0 A's lead and loaded the bases on a walk and two singles to open the 2nd before handing the ball over to reliever Jesse Chavez, who promptly served up a grand slam by Nick Kurtz. Butler went the traditional route with his second home run of the game, a huge drive to center in the 3rd, which completed the A's scoring.

With neither team going anywhere this year (Braves, 39-51; A's, 38-55), only 8,620 fans attended the contest, the opener of a three-game series. Notably, the A's are the youngest team in the majors and will move to a permanent home in Las Vegas in 2027. It appears the Braves, losers of five straight, are going to see their string of seven straight post-season appearances come to an end this year. They won the NL East six straight seasons, from 2018 to 2023, and were a wild card last season.

While Lawrence, and others on the A's like rookie sensation Jacob Wilson, appear to be headed in the right direction, Atlanta's Fuentes, who gave up eight earned runs in one-plus innings, may be headed back to the minors. In four starts, he's 0-3 with a 13.86 ERA, having allowed 23 hits and 20 earned runs in just 13 innings. Wilson exited Tuesday's series opener after being hit by a Fuentes pitch on the left hand in the first inning, but he's expected back in the lineup soon as X-rays revealed nothing serious. Batting .335 with 111 hits, nine homers and 42 RBI, Wilson was named starting shortstop for the American League in next week's All-Star game.

AL Streaks: Blue Jays, won 10; White Sox, lost 3.

San Francisco's Oracle Park's unusual design worked to the Giants' favor in their thrilling, walk-off, 4-3, win over the Phillies Tuesday night. Down, 3-1, with one out and runners on first and third in the bottom of the ninth, Patrick Bailey launched a high, looping drive to right which caromed off the top of the wall which is part of the right field fair-foul line and bounded along the warning track past both the right and center fielders.

Bailey raced around the bases, hitting home without the need of a slide, well ahead of the late throw, with an inside-the-park game winning homer. Bailey had singled earlier in the game, finishing 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, scoring the game's winning run.

The win was the Giants' fifth straight, moving them closer to the first place Dodgers - losers of four straight. San Francisco trails Los Angeles by five games in the division with San Diego one game further back. The Phillies lost their second straight to the Giants and are now tied with the Mets atop the NL East. The series concludes Wednesday at Oracle Park.

Boston's win was their fourth straight, leaving them 6 1/2 out in the AL East, in fourth place behind the streaking Blue Jays, who have won nine straight. Colorado is 34 1/2 games out in the NL West and has 70 losses against just 21 wins. The series continues Tuesday.

Junk walked two and struck out three. Austin Hays scored an unearned run in the 2nd for the Reds after walking, advancing to second and third on a passed ball and wild pitch, finally scoring on a Tyler Stephenson sac fly.

The Royals, third in the AL Central, 14 behind Detroit, took two of three from the Diamondbacks and will close out the first half at home, with three games against the Pirates and three with the Mets. Arizona, fourth in the NL West, trails the Dodgers by 11 1/2 games and hits the road Monday for four games at San Diego and three in Los Angeles with the Angels before the break.

Seattle's Luis Castillo (5-5, 3.31) shut out the Pirates over seven innings, and Andres Munoz earned his 20th save with a hitless 9th inning as the Mariners held on for a 1-0 win over Pittsburgh, Saturday at home.

Castillo had his best outing of the year and needed it, given the Mariner's inability to push across more than just a single run. The 32-year old righty threw 67 of 99 pitches for strikes, fanning eight without missing any walks. Castillo set down the first nine batters in order, allowed only a leadoff single in the 4th and a two out single in the 6th - both by Spencer Horwitz - and finished his stint with a pair of Ks. No baserunner advanced past first.

Matt Brash pitched a hitless 8th prior to Munoz's three-out save. The win kept the Mariners in second place, seven games behind AL West-leading Houston, 6-4 winners over the Dodgers Saturday night. Pittsburgh strengthened its hold on last place in the NL Central.

Alonso stroked a two-run homer to right in the 5th inning and added a three-run shot in the 7th for good measure, his 19th and 20th of the year. Alonso's five RBI gave him 73 on the year, tying him with Arizona's Eugenio Suarez, both two behind the Cubs' Seiya Suzuki, who leads the NL and the majors with 75. The Yankees also hit three home runs in the game, though they were all solo shots.

The Cubs weren't exactly the most gracious holiday hosts as they entertained their long-standing rivals from St. Louis at Wrigley Field by socking a franchise record eight home runs in a 11-3 slaughter. Chicago batters were especially unkind to Cardinal starter, Miles Mikolas, who surrendered six home runs and eight earned runs. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit two off the St. Louis hurler, as did first baseman Michael Busch (.288, 17, 55), who saved a third dinger for reliever John King.

Busch went 4-for-4 with three homers and a single, scored three runs and drove in five, helping send the Cardinals to their fourth straight loss, leaving them in third place, 6 1/2 out. The Cubs lead the Brewers by four games in the NL Central. The three-game series with St. Louis continues Saturday, concludes Sunday.

In Tuesday's 12-5 romp, Springer had a solo shot, a grand slam, and drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single, setting a career mark with seven RBI. The Blue Jays have taken two straight from the Yankees after Tuesday's 12-5 beatdown courtesy of Toronto's veteran outfielder, 35 year-old George Springer, who belted a pair of home runs - one a grand slam - and drove in a career-high seven runs.

The Yankees scored two runs in the first, but Springer's solo shot in the 4th inning got Toronto to within a run. In the 8th, Springer feasted on Yankee pitching again, driving in two more runs with a bases-loaded single. A parade of five Yankee pitchers yielded eight hits and six walks as the Blue Jays reached second place, passing by Tampa Bay, losers of three straight, and are now within one game of the first place Yankees.
