Wilyer Abreu drove in five runs with an inside-the-park home run and an 8th-inning grand slam, leading the Red Sox to a 13-6 win over Cincinnati in the opener of a three-game series at Boston's Fenway Park.

After the Red Sox scored seven 1st inning runs, the Reds came back with four of their own. Abreu's race around the bases made it 7-4 and his 8th-inning slam left no doubt about the game's final outcome.

Boston picked up a game on the Yankees, 5-4 losers to Toronto Monday. The Reds dropped a half game to the idle Cubs in the NL Central. They are 5 1/2 back, but the Brewers are just two down and the Cardinals are three out.

AL Streaks: Blue Jays, Orioles, Tigers, White Sox, Mariners, won 2; Guardians, lost 4

National League

The Phillies padded their NL East lead over the idle Mets Monday as Zack Wheeler blanked San Diego over eight innings for a 4-0 Phillies win in the opener of a three-game series at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park.

Wheeler allowed six hits and walked none, striking out 10 to improve his record to 8-3 on the season. Wheeler's 2.27 ERA is among the best in the majors, and his 136 strikeouts leads the National League.

Philly is two games up on the Mets in the East while the Padres slipped a half game and trail the Dodgers by 7 1/2. The series continues Tuesday.

American League

Aaron Judge broke out of an extended slump with a pair of homers, leading the Yankees to a 12-5 win over the visiting A's.

Judge launched his 29th home run of the season in the 4th inning with Cody Bellinger aboard, putting the Yankees up 7-0. The A's managed to score a run in the 5th and four in the 6th, but the game was already out of hand and Judge ended any doubts with #30, a 426-foot bomb to left center, again with Bollinger on base. Judge's four RBI gave him 67, two behind Seattle's Cal Raleigh for the AL and major league lead. Raleigh also leads Judge by two in the home run department.

Despite still leading the majors with a .356 batting average, the month of June has not been kind to Judge, the 2024 AL MVP. His average dropped 40 points from June 10. Though he's only hit .258 for the month, Judge still hit nine homers and drove in 17. What would be considered a pretty good stretch for most players is not up to the usual standards for one of the best players in the majors.

New York's win kept them in first place in the AL East, though the margin is only 1 1/2 over the Rays and 3 games over the Blue Jays. The Yankees will get a chance to show what they're made of prior to the All-Star break. A four-game series at Toronto starts Monday. After that, they play three at Citi Field against the Mets, then return home for back-to-back three-game series against Seattle and the Cubs.

The A's retained their hold on last place in the AL West, dropping two of three to the Yankees over the weekend.

AL Streaks: Tigers, won 2; Guardians, lost 4.

National League

Despite their last place position in the NL Central, the Pittsburgh Pirates can deliver the goods, as the Mets found out this weekend at PNC Park as the Pirates swept their three-game series with a 12-1 pummeling Sunday.

Oneil Cruz led the Pirates' 16-hit barrage with a pair of two-run homers, his 14th of the year coming in the first inning, as the Pirates jumped all over Mets' starter Frankie Montas, plating five runs in the opening frame. Cruz delivered again in the 7th with his 15th dinger. Six different Pirates had at least two hits as they completed their dismantling of the Mets, winning 9-1 Friday and 9-2 Saturday.

Cruz, along with his 15 home runs and 35 RBI, leads the National League with 27 stolen bases.

The Pirates will try to keep things going when they host St. Louis for three games starting Monday. The Mets, now 1 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the NL East, will try to right their floundering ship when they host three with the Brewers starting Tuesday, followed by three at home with the Yankees. The Mets have lost 13 of their last 16 games.

NL Streaks: Marlins, won 7; Diamondbacks, lost 4.

Tucker's 4-for-5 night pushed his average to .291 and kept the Cubs two clear of second place Milwaukee in the NL Central. Houston remained 6 1/2 up on Seattle in the AL West.

The series concludes Sunday.

NL Streaks: Marlins, won 6, Rockies, lost 5

In the opener of a three-game series at Baltimore's Camden Yards, Gary Sanchez went 4-for-5 with two singles, a double, and a two-run homer, and reached base a fifth time with a walk in his six plate appearances as the Orioles clubbed the Rays, 22-8.

The Rays took a 6-0 lead in the 2nd, only to see Baltimore respond with four in the bottom of the frame and the hit parade was on. The two teams accounted for 34 hits combined. Sanchez walked and scored in the inning.

Sanchez singled in a run in the 3rd, cutting the Rays lead to one, and socked a home run in the 5th that put the O's up, 8-7. He singled home another pair of runs in the 6th, drove in another run in the 7th, grounding into a fielder's choice and capped off his night by doubling and scoring in the 8th, tallying four RBI and three runs for the game. Sanchez has been pressed into action recently due to injury to regular starter, Adley Rutschman. Gray didn't walk a batter, setting down the first 14 batters in order before Nolan Jones broke up the no-hit bid in the fifth with a two-out single. After that it was lights out, as Gray mowed down the next 13, needing just 89 pitches (66 strikes), facing just one over the minimum. Gray went 13-9 last year for St. Louis. His best season was 2015 with Oakland, when his went 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA and 169 Ks. His ERA is 3.36 this season, with 101 strikeouts. His 8 wins has him tied with five other pitchers atop the NL.

In Miami's 12-5 road win over the Giants, every batter in the Marlins starting lineup had exactly one hit, except for DH Agustin Ramirez, who had three - a single, double, and two-run home run - as the Marlins completed a three-game sweep in San Francisco.

Ramirez doubled in the first inning and came around to score on Kyle Stowers' three-run blast. Ramirez tacked on a pair with his two-run dinger in the 4th and drove in another run with his third hit of the game, a single to center that drove in the last of Miami's runs as the Marlins plated four in the 8th.

Miami's win was their fourth straight, improving their record on the road to 17-21, which is better than their home mark of 17-24. They are out of the basement, having passed by Washington in the NL East by two games. The Nationals have lost seven of their last 10. The Giants lost their third straight, falling 6 1/2 behind the Dodgers in the NL West.

Wednesday was a pitcher's delight, as seven different teams were held scoreless. On a full slate of 15 games only two losing teams scored more than three runs (Toronto, lost, 5-4, to Cleveland in 10 innings; San Francisco, lost 8-5 to Miami, also 10 innings).

The top effort among major league pitchers was turned in by Texas Ranger's Jacob deGrom, who shut down Baltimore batters on one hit over seven plus innings, walking two and striking out seven in a 7-0 win over the Orioles.

deGrom took a perfect game into the 7th inning, walked two batters in the frame, but still had a no-hitter entering the eighth. While some online betting sites have closed futures wagering on AL MVP because of the season Aaron Judge has been putting together, they may have jumped the gun - or a shark - as Seattle's Cal Raleigh is having a sensational season.

While Raleigh is batting just .266, his power numbers are on a par with Judge's, whose batting average has dropped more than 20 points in recent days. Judge is still leading the league at .372.

Seattle's win snapped Boston's six-game winning streak and left them 4 1/2 behind the Astros in the LA West. Boston is in fourth place in the AL East, 5 1/2 out. The series concludes Wednesday in Seattle.

Brayan Bello shut out the Yankees on three hits over seven solid innings, as the Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of the division leaders with a 2-0 win Sunday in Boston.

Bello had to work to keep Yankee hitters of the scoreboard, throwing 114 pitches as he improved his record to 3-1 on the year. Bello fanned a season-high eight, including Aaron Judge three times. It was the second straight game in which Judge struck out three times. His major league-leading batting average dropped to a merely-mortal .378.

The Yankees only got five hits the entire game and scored just four runs in the three games at Fenway. Boston has taken five of six from New York this season and have closed the gap between the rival franchises to 6 1/2 games. The Yankees still lead the AL East by 3 1/2 over Tampa Bay, winners of three straight over the crosstown Mets, and 4 1/2 over Toronto. Boston has won five straight.

AL Streaks: Astros, Red Sox, won 5; Royals, lost 6.
