Mint Juleps and the Right Bourbon

This recipe comes from All Recipes, a trusted source.

Ingredients

Mint Simple Syrup:

2 cups water

2 cups white sugar

1/2 cup roughly chopped fresh mint leaves

Cocktails:

8 cups crushed ice, or as needed

32 fluid ounces Kentucky bourbon

8 sprigs fresh mint for garnish

Make the simple syrup ahead of when you plan to serve: Bring water, sugar, and chopped mint to a boil over high heat in a small saucepan. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar is completely dissolved, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool. Pour syrup through a strainer to remove mint leaves.

To make the mint juleps: Fill eight glasses with crushed ice; pour 4 ounces bourbon and 1/4 cup mint syrup into each cup. (Add extra syrup for anyone with a sweet tooth.) Top each drink with a mint sprig.

As far as bourbon is concerned, Kentucky bourbon would be the proper way to go. Following are some suggestions. Everybody has different tastes. This list is only a guide.

Woodford Reserve - Distilled in Versailles, Kentucky this remarkable straight bourbon was first introduced in 1996, with a mash containing 18% rye and aged between 6-7 years. 45.2% ABV.

Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon - a straight bourbon that is comprised from two mash bills (60% corn, 35% rye, 5% barley and 75% corn, 20% rye, 5% barley) with yeast strains that produce a light and spicy profile along with a rich and fruity one. 45% ABV.

Knob Creek 9 Year Small Batch Bourbon - first released in 1992 as part of the Jim Beam Small Batch Collection with a 9 year age statement. The bourbon is bottled at 100 proof.

Wild Turkey Bourbon 101 - barrelled at a lower entry-proof, the product is a lower proof as it comes off the still prior to maturing. That lends to more flavor from the mash bill (corn, rye, and malted barley). Wild Turkey Bourbon 101 is pulled from the barrel at 109 proof before being proofed down only a touch. Not for the faint of heart.

Maker's Mark - The ultimate standby. According to the company website, Bill Samuels, Sr., simply wanted a whisky he would enjoy drinking. Never bitter or sharp, Maker's Mark is made with soft red winter wheat, instead of the usual rye, for a one-of-a-kind, full-flavored bourbon. To ensure consistency, we rotate every barrel by hand and age our bourbon to taste, not time. Each and every bottle of Maker's is still hand-dipped in red wax at our distillery in Loretto, KY., just like Bill, Sr. would have wanted.

Fearless Rick's Spring/Summer Health Drink

The photo above shows all the ingredients to make a healthy drink that is also quite refreshing.

The drink, which has no name, so let's just call it a Fruity Fearless, is truly good for all parts of the body and psyche.

Vodka, whatever brand you like and in whatever quantity you desire, is for mental health, obviously.

The powdered drink mix - also available in many flavors from a variety of manufacturers - is strictly for flavor. It's advisable to use an equal amount of the drink mix (pre-made of course) and vodka for the best results.

About three years ago, Ocean Spray released their Cranberry-Elderberry 100% juice. It's exceptional. Make sure to buy the 100% juice, not the cocktail, as that is watered down to only about 6% actual juice. You'll pay extra for 100% juice (about $5-6 depending on where you shop), but it's well worth it. Cranberries are great for the kidney and as a counter to infections, and elderberries are essential in warding off all manner of disease and viruses, from the common cold to covid and the flu.

Depending on how rich you like your blend, add more for a heartier, tangier drink, just a splash for a little flavor and all the wonderful health benefits.

Finally, top off with a dose of tonic water, which, as you should know, contains quinine, the ultimate "tonic" for a variety of ailments. Quinine has been used for the treatment of malaria and associated febrile states, leg cramps caused by vascular spasm, internal hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and pleural cavities. Along with the cranberries and elderberries, quinine will assure that you never get sick. A few of these a day will put you in a happy, healthy place.
