1. Cover: This month's cover is what one does with multiple cover pics of old Sports Illustrated magazines (and some Playboys, too). The idea for a sports collage to tick off the fall - the best time of the year for sports fans - with baseball entering the pennant races, playoffs and World Series and both college and pro football seasons starting, was imagined as a work of art. Willie Mays, Roger Maris, Derek Jeter, and Broadway Joe Namath are among the images. We have more.
2. From the Publisher's Desk: This month, Fearless Rick takes a crack at explaining - like it needs explanation - why guys love sports, from the participatory level to the sedentary slouching on the couch in fromt of the TV screen. Also, not to be missed is the list of historical baseball and football events that occurred in the month of September. 3. Contents /Credits: This is where we get to not just enumerate our pages, but talk a little bit about the contents, also known as pimping our work. Writing the credits is also fun, though something of a waste of time. Idleguy.com hasn't hired anybody, but we plan on multiple layoffs and firing in months and years ahead. 4. Calendar: We're still trying to beef up the calendar, an ongoing process which might eventually require a part-time person, as it updates in a snap. You'll find the best events for September and October on the calendar page, so check back often. 5. State of the World: The world isn't always about politics, wars, famine, and crime. Sometimes it's just about playing games, which is what this month's SOTW is centered upon. 6. Feature: In keeping with the football theme, F. Scott Fitzgerald arrives with a yarn surrounding the collegiate rivalry between Yale and Princeton, a story that captures the flavor of sport during the World War I era. The story, "The Bowl", was originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1928, and resides in the public domain. 7. Sports: A closer look at the upcoming NFL season, Fearless Rick & Coin Flip Picks for Week #1 in the NFL; Impressions from college football's opening weekend. 7a. Sports Extra: Updated Major League Baseball standings division by division with wild card status through games of August 31, with analysis of which teams did well (Arizona, Milwaukee, Kansas City) through the month and which did not, plus more on the hapless White Sox, who ended August losing nine straight and might just be the story of the year, as they appear to be headed to the worst regular season record of all time. 8. Money: There's all kinds of money tied up in sports - oodles of it, in fact. Idleguy.com examines some of the more lucrative aspects of the sporting world, especially in the baseball and football realms. 9. Food & Drink: What extravaganza would be complete without some game munchie recipes and drink concoctions for game watching and general relaxation? 10. Books: This month's selections include books (all in PDF format, ready for FREE download to any device) with a football theme, including Dan Jenkin's hilarious, "Semi-Tough", George Plimpton's seminal work, "Paper Lion", and Jerry Kramer's inside account for the Green Bay Packers' 1967 championship season, in "Instant Replay." All must reads for the intelligent sports fan. 11. Public Domain / Toast of the Town: Happily, another ancient screed by none other than Ring Lardner was obtained, this one, a syndicated 1921 rip of a piece called, "The Perils of Being a Football Writer." 12. Back Page: Here's where you can get a head's up on next months offerings and also contact idleguy.com with any information, concerns, praise, or complaints you may have. We don't do comment sections on our pages because they eventually get full of spammers and generally detract from what we consider to be exceptional content by itself. Daily Idler: This is the place to go for links to various subjects, from beer to money to sports sites, to daily quizzes, crosswords and Sudoku, the Daily Idler has you covered. Home: Peruse back issues of idleguy.com, now dating back more than a year. Imagine that!
