Celebrate Independence, idleguy.com July 2024, Vol. 1, #6

1. Cover - This month's cover tries to capture what used to be America's promise as a clear-eyed and forthright nation, with the American Bald Eagle large as life. Independence Day, July 4, is celebrated in the United States on the anniversary of the colonists' approval of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress. If only the current U.S. congress had the foresight and courage of their predecessors...

2. From the Publisher's Desk - Our Fearless Leader covers the first (and hopefully the last) presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden and explains why these top-end time-killers don't really hit the mark.

3. Contents /Credits - You are on this page, so do we need to explain any further?

4. Calendar - continuing to keep idleguys everywhere abreast of developments in their world, this month's calendar includes a slew of sporting events - British Open, Wimbledon, MLB All-Star game - but is expanded to include political events, most importantly, the elections in France and England.

5. State of the World - General parliamentary elections in France and England take center stage in this month's SOTW. Idleguy.com examines the impact they may have and updates as results become available.

6. Feature - Since Ben Kohn has done all he can to wreck Playboy's heritage, we figured it was time to stop beating that dead horse and went with a review of the recent Supreme Court decisions instead.

7. Sports - So much happens in July. Golf's Open Championship (British Open), Wimbledon (tennis), and MLB's All-Star game and home run derby are big events, plus, idleguy.com updates the AL and NL standings through June 30 on page 7a to see which teams are still in the hunt and which have fallen off the pace through the month. Opening ceremonies for the Paris Olympics are July 26.

8. Money - Most people measure their wealth - or lack of it - by calculating their net worth in US$, or yen, euros, or other currency. Often overlooked as a measure of wealth are things that can only be truly valued by wieght, rarity, fineness, or other, more esoteric qualities than currency.

9. Food & Drink - We continue to assist in making outdoor entertaining a successful experience with some tips on grilling, meats, and some side dishes that are sure to please. Having a bartender helps, and we have some summertime drink recipes that are sure to keep everybody cool.

10. Books - Additions to the idleguy.com library this month are a little on the light reading side, taking a break from the usual fare of classics and heavy tomes. On the sidebar is a suggested summer reading list for the beach, the park, the train or anywhere you might happen to be. Most of these titles are still available in paperback form or in formats available for portable reading devices, downloadable to phones or computers.

11. Public Domain / Toast of the Town - This month's short story was penned by sci-fi pioneer, Ray Bradbury. Originally published 1948 in Thrilling Wonder Stories, Vol. 31, No. 3, the story, "The Shape of Things" concerns itself with birth, parenting, and dimensions.

12. Back Page - a look ahead to stories and articles for the idleguy.com August issue, and the contact form.
